The battle system designed for Phantasy Star III introduced several innovations for the series. Some of these were carried over to other titles later, while others were discarded. One example from the latter category is the ability to set one character in defense of another. This maneuver allows the use of some unusual protective strategies, such as having a fully healed character absorb a strike aimed at one who is badly injured. In most cases, the defending character would be a tank like Rhys or Wren, who would protect a mage style character like Lyle. This artwork from the game manual illustrating the feature reverses those roles, giving Lyle an opportunity to block for the bruised and battered Landen prince.
