Galleries Guide

Introduction

What is the Galleries section?
The Galleries section is the central location for browsing images featured on Fringes of Algo. Images are grouped by the Phantasy Star products to which they relate and by categories representing the types of images. There are categories for Fan Artwork, Original Artwork, Scans, Animations, and so on.

What is the Artwork forum?
The Artwork forum is where images can be submitted to the Galleries by members. Each image submitted to the Galleries by a member receives a dedicated topic in the Artwork forum. In these topics, members can review and discuss the images.

Members can also use the Artwork to share images that are not submitted to the Galleries. However, these images do not benefit from the special features of the Galleries.

What is the Image of the Day forum?
Each day, a Phantasy Star related image is featured on the site with a short commentary. These images are often from official Sega sources, such as games or books. Occasionally, images from non-official sources, like magazines, may be featured as well. Each featured image has a dedicated topic in the Image of the Day forum, in which members can discuss the featured image and related subjects.

Why should I submit my artwork to the Galleries?
Artwork included in the Galleries can benefit from the special features of that section. These features include easier browsing through categories and optional association with one or more Phantasy Star product galleries, tags, special BBCodes, avatar options, resizing, and thumbnail displays in the Artwork forum. When other features are added to the Galleries in the future, all images in the Galleries will benefit from those as well. The images will also be hosted locally on this site, ensuring that they are available for all future visitors.

How do I post images to the Galleries?
To submit an image to the Galleries, go to the Galleries section or the Artwork forum and click the "New Topic" button. This will open a special posting form for the Artwork forum. Fill in the details here to upload your image. You will be required to select a category, such as Fan Artwork or Original Artwork. You can select related Phantasy Star products and tags for the image as well. Only one image may be submitted at a time because each image will have a matching discussion topic.

How do I use tags?
Tags are a way to group images that use common themes, such as the appearance of certain characters or places. To add tags to your image, you may select from the list of predefined tags and/or enter your own tags. There are existing tags for most themes already, but it may be quicker to just type in your tag instead of looking through the long list. If you want to use a tag that does not exist, you can also enter those in the provided space. The tag will be created unless it triggers the word blocking feature.

Tags should be in lower case and consist of only letters, numbers, and dashes. Tags entered in other formats will be converted to this format. If you enter "Chaz Ashley", it will be converted to "chaz-ashley".

Can I post my artwork hosted on another site?
If you have artwork hosted on a site such as Photobucket or Deviantart, you can post that for discussion in the Artwork forum by linking to the location of the art on the other site. However, images posted in this manner are not included in the Galleries and will not receive feature benefits of the Galleries. Due to this, it is preferred that artwork be uploaded to this site when posting.

Why not just use post attachments?
While useful, the forum's attachment feature is not designed for a dedicated artwork system. It lacks many features, room for growth, and has much smaller size limits for submitted images. There is also a site-wide limit on the amount of space attachments can use. When the limit is reached, older attachments may be deleted to make room for new ones.

Editing and Deleting Images and Artwork

How do I edit or delete my images in the Galleries?
To edit an image you have submitted to the Galleries, edit the first post of the image's associated topic in the Artwork forum. The edit post form will provide options for deleting an image and changing the information of the image. If you wish to replace the image, for instance with a clearer version, you must delete the old image before uploading a new one.

You can also delete the post, but if you intend to delete the image, it is recommended to delete the image before deleting the post. Deleting the post first will leave your image in the Galleries system and the post contents will continue to be displayed on the image's gallery page.
