Set in AW 1268, between Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star Adventure follows an Agent of the Motavian government as he visits an inventor friend on Dezoris. When the inventor is kidnapped, the Agent must rescue him and attempt to prevent a deadly new machine from being unleashed while discovering the secrets of life on the frozen planet.
Breaking from the style of the previous two games, Phantasy Star Adventure is a text adventure instead of a traditional console roleplaying game. Onscreen dice are used to determine damage amounts in battles, with movement and all other actions taking place through menus. Having originally been developed as what amounts to an online game in the early 1990's, the game is very short; it can be fully completed in a half hour or less. The same formula was also used for the Phantasy Star II Text Adventures.
Even though the shortness of Phantasy Star Adventure prevents much story development, a surprisingly deep tale of human greed and the evil that it can bring is related. The villain is not some grand cosmic entity or unseen machine as in other series installments, but a simple person whose thirst for power turns him into a monster unlike any other. Many interesting glimpses into the back story of everyday life in the greater Phantasy Star story are shown.
