This title, named SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection in Europe and Australia, compiles over 40 early Sega games onto one disc. All games in this collection feature an optional display upgrade to 720p for high definition televisions. Several unlockable features are also in the collection. Included among these are nine extra unlockable games, thirty minutes of video interviews, and forty five minutes of trailers. At the time of release, it is by far the largest collection of Sega games yet available.
The developer of this collection is Backbone Entertainment, a studio of Foundation 9 Entertainment. Another Foundation 9 studio, Digital Eclipse, was developer of several previous Sega collections. Some content has been reused from Digital Eclipse's Sega Genesis Collection for this compliation.
The collection, though not specifically targeted to Phantasy Star, is the first released outside of Japan to include all four major entries from the classic series.
To promote this collection, Sega also released SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection Soundtrack.
Early press materials from Sega indicated four Phantasy Star titles would be included in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. However, initially the only named entries from the series were Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III, and Phantasy Star IV. The statement of four titles was soon removed from Sega's web sites. Combined with an early press release stating that Master System titles would be included, this fostered much speculation regarding the possible inclusion of Phantasy Star as an unlockable title. This speculation was later confirmed when Sega released screenshots of Phantasy Star from the collection.
