While some songs from select games had been previously available in general Sega music compilations, there was not a soundtrack devoted entirely to Phantasy Star until the release of this two volume set. The first volume, sold for ¥3,700, contains two compact discs and features original and remixed music from Phantasy Star, Phantasy Star II, and Phantasy Star III. The second volume, sold for ¥2,500, is a single compact disc that contains music selections and medleys from Phantasy Star IV. The packaging of both volumes was designed to mirror the cover artwork of a companion book, Phantasy Star Collection.
Phantasy Star Collection: Sound Collection and Phantasy Star Collection were both released two weeks before Phantasy Star IV, providing previews of both the music and artwork of that game.
