When video games were localized for release in North America during the 16-bit console years, they were not simply translated. The localization teams would occasionally rewrite sections of a script so their audience could better relate to the game. At times, this included change the names of items. Once such case occurred with a footwear item called Sandals in the North American release of Phantasy Star II. The original item, pictured here, was much more like a shoe. Oddly, there is actually another item in the North American version called Shoes. Your guess as to why the names were changed like this is as good as mine.
