 Post subject: Nintendo 64 Anniversary

Yesterday, June 23, 2016 was the 20th anniversary of the Nintendo 64's release in Japan. The video game system was released in the USA a few months later.

We still have our Nintendo 64, although haven't played it much lately. Anyone else still have a Nintendo 64? What does everyone think of this game system?

We still have one. 2, in fact. I think it had a lot of good games that helped pave the way and set some standards for modern games. On the other hand, the N64's games and its contemporaries just generally haven't aged very well. I find them, and their remakes, very difficult to go back to.

The N64's library also has the issue of being really top heavy. That is, all of nintendo's 1st party stuff is fine and dandy, but once you get past that there is NOTHING on the console. I think even the Wii had the occasional 3rd party game that was decent.

Call it a controversial opinion, but I think even the Sega Saturn has a deeper library (that is, more enjoyable games to play overall vs. top heavy hits) than the N64 does. And obviously, there's the Playstation's behemoth-like library.

My experience with the N64 has more to do with "the e-word" (not having grown up with the console), but outside of the big names like Mario 64/Banjo Kazooie/Zelda/etc. there isn't a lot to play.

But the Nintendo games were all you needed! Seriously, I never felt a lack of games on the N64 (even though there was quite a bit of a lack), because every game I had on there was so entertaining (to me).
Can't believe this system is 20 years old. Man, I feel old. :blank:

I think you can argue it either way. :) I would say I agree with Hukos that it was a very top-heavy library. But on the other hand, quality over quantity isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sure, the PS1 (And the PS2, for that matter) had massive libraries and a lot of third-party support, and I think that was a net benefit for the systems, but yeah, for every great game, there were also probably at least 3 pieces of utter rubbish.
