When Phantasy Star was made in the 1980s, developers were less concerned with potentially alienating customers by including religious references in video games. It was common to see priests used as a vehicle for the revival of defeated characters or saving games. Many times, these priests could be found in churches. This image is the interior of such a church as seen in Phantasy Star. Like those in other games from the same time period, this one uses some clearly Christian imagery to represent religion. The giant cross eliminates any doubt as to intended function of this building.

That's a terrific image of the day, and a nice one to see in PS, or any video game for that matter, imho. :)

However, I have to wonder what the consequences or reaction to that type of religious significance would be in today's time and world. Pity that one would even have to think of such a thing but in many places it would no doubt happen today.

If it were included in a new game released today, people would probably complain. It is a much more touchy subject these days. The churches were removed entirely from the PlayStation 2 remake of this game.

An interesting, but sad, fact. Doesn't surprise me though. :yaknow:

Yeah, games used to have a much stronger religious imagery in the past, usually Christian. Nowadays it is a touchy subject, but in a stupid way, as they authors are free to do whatever they want.
It is really a shame that there is no church in the remake.
