Everyone has heard the stories of Saint Bernard dogs rescuing stranded and hypothermic travellers in the Swiss Alps. The most famous was Barry, who apparently saved at least 40 lives before a traveller killed him in a "fit of cowardly terror".
Recently, we humans were given the opportunity to thank the breed, in a small but tangible way, for its centuries of devotion. A St Bernard dog became stuck in the ice in Montana and was rescued by fire-fighters.
