Myau's Tusk Attack

Our second Phantasy Star generation 1 sprite sheet focuses on one of Myau's battle animations. In this game, each type of weapon has a unique attack animation. Myau has two weapon families: tusks and claws. The tusk weapons include items like the Silver Tusk, which is referenced in Phantasy Star IV, and Myau's weaponless physical attack. The animation in the game has Myau leaping up, with a giant fanged jaw biting down on a single foe as the Musk Cat lands. The background scenery and enemy bodies are visible through the jaw, giving it an impressive translucent effect. Most weapon attacks have a similar translucent component, as do magic spell animations.

Unfortunately, that same semi-transparent nature prevents sprite capturing of those components independently. Whatever is behind them is partially obscured and cannot be separated from the translucent overlay. That's why some frames of this sheet have discoloration on Myau's tail - that is part of the jaw overlapping the tail. If the full jaw sprite were included on this sheet, you would see part of a Fishman or other monster behind it. Until emulation technology improves to a point where these layers can be separated, the translucent portions of the attack animations won't be included on sprite sheets I produce.
