Phantasy Star Gaiden, while remaining a side story, make a decent attempt to stay connected to the main series. One method of doing so was using enemies with names or designs based on the classic Phantasy Star foes. One such is the armored ダークマローダ, or Dark Marauder, who borrows at least the last part of his name from a foe in that game. This name would also be used by another homage enemy in Phantasy Star IV. Unlike those Marauders, this one does not carry an axe for slicing foes.
His bulky upper body actually gives the impression that he might have been more at home in a Mega Man game. Ironically, the manual claims he is a type of robot once used for industrial work - much like the corrupted Robot Masters in the original Mega Man adventure.
