When plotting the cutscenes of Phantasy Star IV, the staff at Sega drew references by hand before creating them as 16-bit, sprite based gaming graphics on a computer. In this example, we can see the basis for three cutscenes. In the upper right, Hahn teaches a class at Piata's academy. Gryz spends some time with his younger sister in the other sketches. The developers must have been unsatisfied with the lower left sketch for some reason. While this full torso version of Gryz made it in, Pana was replaced with the sketch on the lower right for the game.
