The Wai Xing Zhan Shi interpretation of Alys' young partner is not a very good one. He is incredibly weak against monsters at the beginning of the game. With just a knife and a helmet, he won't last long unless you level up and buy a sword. Leveling some more once you get Rune is a good idea, too.
