Image of the Day - December 11, 2009

This young man is the driving force at the beginning of Phantasy Star III. Rhys is prince of Landen, a kingdom that has a heritage dating back 1,000 years. The legendary leader Orakio settled in the kingdom for a time, with his descendents continuing to live there after Orakio disappeared. In those days, the land was at war with the Layan faction, but has enjoyed peace thanks to the total lack of a Layan presence for centuries. At least, that was the case until Rhys' wedding day, when a dragon steals away the bride. Rhys calls for war on the Layans, but falls out of favor with his father, the king. So instead, Rhys sets off on his own to rescue his stolen wife-to-be.

Following in the footsteps pioneered by Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom gave each playable character an individual head shot portrait to make them more recognizable to players. This was especially vital for this game, which tended to use the same set of graphics for several characters with slight color changes. Unlike the similar pictures of Nei and friends, however, these portraits were used for speech in important story scenes and the standard character menu. The previous game restricted the portrait availability to Rolf's house, but this one allowed the players to see the characters at any time they were available for play.
