The Big Club, a monster found in the oceans of Palma during Phantasy Star, returns with an updated design in Phantasy Star - Deluxe Edition. The creature's color and signature claw are the only similarities to the original. The earlier design featured a spiked outer shell protecting the forehead, with two eyes and gill-like constructions on the lower face. It was basically a floating face with spikes and the claw. The new version looks more like a realistic insect: a lower body, with two legs and a more vulnerable underbelly is visible. The head is drastically changed, replacing the shell with additional eyes and legs, giving the creature a total of six each. This is one of the few monsters who received an extensive overhaul in the remake.

Internally, the game refers to Big Club as "kabutogani." This term is the common name for Tachypleus tridentatus, a species of horseshoe crabs found in Japan and other Asian countries.
