Another Phantasy Star import from various mythologies was the Manticore family of monsters. Manticore, and the other variant called Sphinx, resemble the legendary beasts for which they are named. They have human heads on the body of a lion, with bat-like wings. Phantasy Star: Deluxe Edition alters their colors and design slightly. Most important perhaps is the tail, which is changed from a scorpion's tail to that of a lion. The scorpion tail is a trait of the mythical manticore that is not shared by the traditional depiction of a sphinx. The absence of the deadly stinger certainly makes this creature less fearsome.
