Scene Sketch - Statue

Image of the Day - July 21, 2009

Before the cutscenes of the classic Phantasy Star games were created as sprite-based game graphics, many of them were sketched in pencil like more traditional artwork. Phantasy Star Collection (Saturn) provides a look at several such sketches for the cutscenes of Phantasy Star IV. In this group, we can see the statue of Alis Landale that would hold the Elsydeon sword. Only half of the statue is actually sketched out; presumably, the sprite artist would have simply mirrored that half to create the other. A thin outline of the sword itself can be seen also. Rune, on the right, is sketched for another cutscene that appears shortly before the statue is shown in the game.
