Site Announcements : Removed Monsters page, General Updates

A new Removed Monsters page has been added in the Phantasy Star IV section. This page discusses the two hidden monsters that were taken out of the game for the final English release. A few other pages have had minor updates as well.

Other updates include Links, the release information for the games in Complete Collection, and the addition of the Japan cover artist to the PSIV credits.

Scheduled Maintenance

This week, there may be some brief downtime for the site as our host conducts some maintenance on their servers. Hopefully this will not affect access to the site, but if it does this should be very limited in duration.

Here's what the host said about it:

For the coming week, Monday through Friday, we are scheduling maintenance windows between 10pm and 11pm Arizona time (5:00am to 6:00am UTC). At some point during each window, we may (not we will) shut down our master database for five minutes to make sure everything works as expected, and that it comes back up properly afterward.

Of course, things often don't go as planned. Hopefully this will be a smooth bit of work, though.

New Collected Editions Page

A new Collected Editions page has been added to the site. This is an article with a brief listing and details for each of the various game collections that include Phantasy Star titles, like Phantasy Star Complete Collection.

For the moment, this page is mostly just a set of short summaries. I may see about expanding it with some images or other information at some point in the future.

Site Announcements : Happy Anniversary!

As of today, the Fringes of Algo Message Board has been open for a full year! I would like to thank all of you, our wonderful members, for making this community thrive and grow during the past year.

When I decided to relaunch the site a year ago, I wasn't sure if the Message Board would be successful. There were, as far as I could find, no active classic series boards at the time. The online Phantasy Star community had fallen apart, mostly. However, in this year you've all proven that the community is still around if there's a place to gather. I'm very happy that we could all come together here to share our love of Phantasy Star and other games.

Here's to you and another great year of chatting with you all!

Site Announcements : History and Mythology Updated

The History and Mythology in Phantasy Star article has been updated with new and expanded entries. The entries for Algol and Stormtroopers have been modified. The new entries are Gurhal, Kuran, Megid, Ragol, and Shir.

Thanks to newsblade for pointing out the absence of Megid from the list, some points about the Stormtroopers, and bringing up the Ragol/Algol connection in the forums.

PSI, PSIV Map Sections reformatted

Site Announcements : PSI, PSIV Map Sections reformatted

The map lists in the Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star IV sections have been reorganized with planet selections, similar to the recent changes to the PSIII map list. Some new maps have also been added to the Phantasy Star section.

The new PSI maps cover Drasgow cavern and three levels of Medusa's Tower.

After quite a long series of updates, the Phantasy Star III Game Maps section is finally complete. This last update includes a reformatting of the map list, overworld maps, and a few miscellaneous maps that had not yet been added.

Server Problems

I would like to apologize to everyone who has had problems accessing the site in the past couple of days. Unfortunately, our host has been having some unexpected problems that required the replacement of several hard drives. We have lost some of the messages posted to the forums on Sunday because of this, I'm afraid.

Early Sunday morning, someone decided to shut off power to the servers of the site's host. They did so without notifying the host about this at all. As a result, many of the servers' drives were fried and had to be replaced (at 5am on a Sunday mind you - it's surprise to me that they even found replacements!), with this site and others on the same host being restored from backups. Fortunately the backups were very recent.

Later, the host's database server (where the forum posts are stored) blew some more drives and those had to be replaced and more backups restored as well. It's due to this that we've lost messages posted on Sunday. Things appear to be mostly under control now and hopefully there will be no more problems.
