Zombie Fire Ants!

You might think the title belongs in the Screen Scene forum talking about a new Sci-Fi Movie of the Week, but this is about something more real than that. In an effort to control fire ant populations, scientists are experimenting with a South American fly that introduces maggots into a fire ant. The maggots eat the brain of the ant, making it wander around like a mindless zombie.

That...is amazing. Nature always finds awesome ways to do stuff like this, creepy as it can be. It will never cease to astonish me.

Oh my word!!!!!!! That is nuts!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder how long it will be before this fly stuff somehow gets incorporated into the human chain of things...our food or some other portion of our lives. This could be scary.

Also, I know the fire ants are very, very bad but on some level, this really ticks me off. It seems like a very inhumane sort of punishment. I think PETA should be a little upset over this one. I wouldn't even expect a fire ant to be treated that cruel way. But, that's just me.
