GamePro struggling

Postby Thoul » Tue Jul 26, '11, 10:21 pm

The difficulties for printed game magazines seem to be increasing. GamePro, one of the oldest to enjoy an uninterrupted print run, has announced that they're moving to a quarterly publication schedule. That means instead of having 12 issues a year, there will only be four - a cut of 66%. The new issues are supposed to be larger, with 50 extra pages and cost $9.99.

Do you think this move will help keep GamePro in print, or is a sign that the magazine is on the way out?

Sad news. Unfortunately, it seems that the only magazines that will survive are the ones backed by the gaming companies, which is very sad. I was looking over a Nintendo magazine here in Brazil and, in its coverage about E3, it was as if the other companies didn't even exist. I guess it is the same for the others.

I'm not sure even those will last all that long. Nintendo offloaded their US magazine to an outside publisher some years ago. That publisher is struggling to adapt to the changing market, too. They aren't at the point of cutting back on publication yet, but they do seem to be considering it.

Well, it seems that the move to a quarterly publishing schedule was not enough to save GamePro. It was announced today that GamePro is shutting down operations. The November issue is the final edition of the magazine. Even their website is being shut down, effective December 5. The brand is being rolled into PC World, a computer website owned by the same parent company.

Truly, this marks the end of a unique publication. GamePro may not have been everyone's favorite magazine, but it definitely had a major impact on gamer culture over the years.

It’s always sad to see something like that happen. In Australia we had a rather good magazine dedicated to video games entitled Total Gamer it ran from about 2005 through til' early 2007 when it had to shut down its production, I own quite few issues of it still. Now the only decent Australian video game magazine on the market is Hyper magazine.
