The "word of the year" for 2010 is " austerity " :

I can honestly say I've never heard anyone say "austerity" in 2010. Based on my own interactions "epic" appears to be the word of 2010 unfortunately.

Forget about 2010; I've never heard of that word before at all. Where do they come up with a basis for naming something that obscure as the word of the year?
