Nintendo announces the 2DS

A new portable system that plays DS and 3DS games in 2D only for $130. Available on October 12th. I don't see much of a point to this unless you really can't afford a 3DS. I don't have a 3DS yet, still waiting for something I can't like without, which I'm not finding.

There's also the problem that there are people who can't handle certain 3D effects without getting motion sickness, plus the fact that certain types of 3D effects can cause damage to the developing eyes of younger children.

The 2DS was also designed to take greater abuse than the 3DS, which means that, in total, this is a more child-friendly, cheaper, less gimmicky version of the 3DS- that's due to release at around the same time as Pokémon X and Y.

I might buy one because:

1. I want Shin Megami Tensei IV.
2. And New Super Mario Bros. 2.
3. And Fire Emblem Awakening.
4. I'm cheap.
5. I don't care much for the 3D aspects anyway.

One of my co-workers bought a 2DS on launch day... and returned it the very next day and got himself a 3DS. The 2DS really is a rather cumbersome handheld. It's surprisngly bulky, which I guess does at least imply sturdy construction.

Downsides to the 2DS:
- Fixed screen positions.
- No 3D capability, yet still has 3D cameras.
- Not pocket sized.
- Less screen protection.

Pluses for the 2DS:
- Price point.
- Overall construction should prove more resiliant against potential child induced damage.
- 3D Aside, still possesses all of the other features of a 3DS.

It's basically a 3DS that you can't shut, which does indeed make it awkward. That's one of the things I liked about my DS systems: you can close them and they take up half the space (sort of).

Oh, crap. I think that makes Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass impossible to beat, then.

Oh, now that you mention it Snorb, the inability to close the system also makes Trace Memory impossible to beat.

IMHO, this 2DS have nearly no interest for me, as I already have the XL 3DS (the black model ! at last ! ^^) but for those who can't ou don't want to play with the 3D why not ? But for me not to play with 3D isn't really interesting.
And about the fact that some games are impossible to beat without the possibility to close the system is highly a very bad point :(
Ah trace memory ! (or Another Code in Europe !) : what a great game !
