Playstation 4 Pro

Looks like there may soon be another type of Playstation 4 that will have upgraded features to do more, etc.

I can't wait to hear what the cost of this new addition may wind up being!

Re: Another PS 4 ?

Rumors of this have been floating around for quite a long while. It is supposed to output at 4K on screens that can do that resolution, and give a general boost to the console's overall power, and help with Playstation VR. Not a bad idea.

The one thing I fear is that it may end up like the "New" Nintendo 3DS (I hate the name, blah blah blah, moving on). Out of fear of splitting the market (a legit fear), few developers will take advantage of the power boost. If a game can only run on the newer model, a good chunk of the consumer base will be shut out. I would say it is not entirely reasonable to expect most consumers to upgrade a console that is only a few years old and I can understand why some may see it as a slap in the face for early adopters. But of course some will upgrade, and if you've been considering a PS4 at this point, you might as well wait for the new model.

I can get why console makers want to upgrade mid-cycle. Easily upgradeable hardware is undoubtedly a big advantage of PC gaming, and if you invest enough, it can take a long time before a good GPU really starts showing its age. But it has its risks as well if that upgrade starts looking like a massive price jump for new releases for most of the consumer base. I think to do this right, console devs need to take another page out of the book of PC gaming - graphics options. Allow players with the newest model to take advantage of nicer graphics, but still allow those with the older model to play.
Next Pokemon game(s): Pearl
Last finished Pokémon game: Shield
Other games: Skyrim Special Edition (Switch), Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Switch & PS4), Okami (Switch & PS4)
Other gaming goals: completing a Living Pokedex (minus some event Pokes) and going through at least 1 game per generation

From what I hear, the new ps4 games will have to be compatible with the older models of the ps4. Which is great! That means old ps4s might drop in price, and I can still enjoy the new stuff on it. :yaknow:

And I think that's good overall, but then, what's the point of the newer models that have a processing power boost? Right now, it sort of feels like they're taking a page out of the book of PC gaming but not taking it quite where it needs to be, unless they do implement graphics and performance options on a per-game basis. That'd at least be a step in the right direction. Jim Sterling has a great video on these mid-cycle upgrades and the ups and downs of it.

I mean, varying hardware is one of the double-edged swords of PC gaming. On the one hand, yeah, if you don't have the hardware to run it, you're out of luck unless you have the money to do some upgrades. But on the other hand, in terms of power, at this point, PCs are way ahead of consoles. My PC is leagues more powerful than any of the consoles out there and my boyfriend's is a couple steps above that. And, PC hardware is of pretty varying price points, but also relatively future proof. Last weekend we built a spare PC for Overwatch with a pretty old unused GPU we had around, but it was JUST recent enough to run the lowest version of DirectX that game requires. But it works. Sure, Overwatch does have to run at pretty low graphics settings, but it still maintains at least 60 FPS (important for online shooters). Unless these mid-upgrades cycles take two pages out of the book of PC gaming, I just have a hard time seeing the point of it.

Edited this title thread with the name of the new Playstation 4 gaming console which we didn't know before but now we do.

Anyway, seems the console will sell for around $400 and will be available in November 2016:

I want a ps4, but I don't think I can justify the 400 dollar price tag. D: The slim model is a slight downgrade from the regular one (from what I've read) and is the same price, which is quite disappointing. And it sounds like the two models replace the old model. Meh, I'll stick with the ps3 a little longer. I might get a Vita though.
