I started Cave Story for the third time. Maybe I'll finally be able to play it to the end this time.

My Last Retro Game Was, "Defenders of Oasis" which is a RPG for the Sega gamegear but was recently rereleased last year for the Nintendo 3 DS E shop.

It is one of my most favorite classic car retro RPG's, and it didn't really set the standard for future games, at least within the realm of Sega. You can see the influence it had upon Phantasy Star.

However, Defenders of Oasis, is a game that is set primarily within the Persian Gulf, and follows Babylonian and Persian mythology, pre-Islamic.
It's super cool if you enjoy mythology of other cultures. Or if you just enjoy a good classic RPG set within a Middle Eastern environment.

Probably because I've been going through the AVGN backlog lately just because, I was randomly struck with a retro bug yesterday. It also may be related to my desire to play Skyrim that struck after finishing Shadow of Mordor being sated for the time being (until it comes back). But anyway, last night I played Evo: Search for Eden for SNES. I played it on an emulator in college, but never finished it. Since then, I've actually acquired a cartridge, which is not easy as they're rare and a bit pricey. It's probably one of the three most valuable carts I own, the others being Earthbound and Crusader of Centy. I played it on our Retron 5 after getting the firmware updated, and it's still pretty darn fun. I intend to keep playing it and see if I can actually finish it. The latest firmware update seemed to make the saving to the cartridge on the Retron 5 more reliable, which will be nice if I want to play on one of our actual SNES consoles or my SupaBoy.

Long time not around here, hope I can remedy that soon.

The last 'retro' game I have been playing was Big Sky Trooper for the SNES a couple of days ago.
A little game by Lucasarts that takes inspiration from Zombies ate my neighbours and various science fiction subject and stories including Starship Troopers.
It is all done however in a very friendly style.

I still love the look and concept of this game but while playing it I did realize that like what reviewers wrote it gets rather repetitive very fast.
To top it off, it was quite buggy to sometimes (a 'buggy' SNES game!), when I suddenly found myself back at the hub of the game just after I tried to get through a world I decided to call it quits.

A shame as I really had this in my memory as a poorly known little gem in the rough.

I've been playing Super Mario 64 DS on my 3DS. Now, I did not have an N64 growing up (had a Playstation) so I do not have much nostalgia for this game. I probably played it a bit on a neighbor's N64, but that's about it. Playing it now, I still can't decide if I like it or not. I 100% recognize what a big deal it was back then, its place in gaming history, and I will not call it a "bad game." But playing it now, it feels extremely clunky at best. The camera is just awful and seems to be my enemy far more than the actual enemies. The controls feel imprecise as judging depth is extremely difficult, though the former may be because it may be designed for an analog stick and the 3DS circle pad is digital. But in a lot of ways, it reminds how far 3D platforming has come and I think newer platforms like the Mario Galaxy games, Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper outshine it mechanically. Though they of course benefitted from the legacy of Mario 64. I'm just not sure it has aged well and from a modern standpoint, playing it feels very difficult, coming from someone who has no nostalgia for it. I'll probably stick with it a little longer, but it may soon hit a make or break point and I decide whether to see it through to the end (at least to defeating Bowser) or putting it down.

Edit: Gave up on it for now. Some of the mechanics are outdated enough that it's more frustrating than fun, and fun is what I want out of my non-research gaming. I just don't have the nostalgia nor muscle memory to compensate for some of the archaic mechanics/issues that newer platformers have solved. Still not going to say it's bad because it's not a bad game by any means. I'm just not sure time has been as kind to it as the 2D Mario games the preceded it. I also realize, with thought, that probably the main reason I still find the original Spyro games playable is because I do have nostalgia and muscle memory, but from an objective standpoint, those games also have their fair share of outdated/archaic mechanics and issues.

Just finished a play through of the Starfox 64 remake on 3DS. It played alright. Fast paced, good action, the shooting worked fine, though I didn't find any of the bosses much of a challenge (not even the last guy). I didn't lose a single life.

But Falco may be my most hated game character ever. And it's not a love-to-hate, it's just straight up hate. I just simply dislike him, very strongly, on every level, and that may be enough to keep me from exploring the branching paths or seeing what else the game has to offer because I don't want to see his face or hear his voice. I haven't played Starfox that much, but even in Smash, I don't like playing nor listening to him. He doesn't have a single endearing quality to me, and his "sarcasm" that seems to be part of his character comes off as far more irritating and obnoxious than funny or appealing for me.

It may be petty, but this particular character is just so repellant to me I don't want to play a game that features him, unless it's Smash because then I can get the gratification of beating the ever loving snot out of him with a character I DO like.

I'm replying to a year old post, but being honest I totally didn't see it until now!

Mario 64's legacy also has a lot to do with the competition at the time. If you play a lot of 3d platformers on the playstation/n64 you'll quickly realize something - most of them are unplayable trash. The top heavy ones like Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie and Spyro are really nice, but once you get past that layer there's a lot of garbage to go through. They make the often criticized 3D Sonic games look amazing in comparison - which is probably why I'm not as harsh on them as others are; I've played much, much worse.

There's also the fact that later 3D Mario games like Galaxy are a lot more linear and less of a sandbox. Granted, as a game I think Galaxy 1 is better than 64, but if you're desiring the more open ended design of 64 its easy to see why Galaxy would be a bit disappointing.
