Sad story of a rare white rhino that has passed away at a zoo in California:

At 41 years of age, I suppose this was to be expected eventually. I don't know the life span of rhino's but 41 seems to be a grand age.

It is a bit troubling that there are only 3 more white rhino's in the world.

Very disturbing indeed. Three. That is a very small number.

Only three, and that is not enough to have any hope to start a new population and save the species. There simply would not be enough genetic variation to ensure a healthy, viable population. There would be too much inbreeding and as a result, genetic diseases. Rhinos also don't breed very quickly.

Very sad state of affairs to see this species, among others, vanishing before out eyes. Species go extinct all the time, of completely natural causes, but in this case, humans had an undeniable hand in it between habitat destruction and deliberate hunting for just their horns for non-existent medical properties.
