Super Mario new record set

Have you ever tried to play a fast game of Super Mario, or any other video game for that matter?

Well, a new record has been set in which a game of Super Mario was completed in only 4 minutes and 57 seconds!

Congrats on such a fast accomplishment!

I couldn't even get my controller working in only 4 minutes, lol.

Really, though, I never was a fan of skipping worlds and all that stuff. I felt like I had not really played the game unless I played through each stage and each world. But, that's just me, I guess.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with it (skipping) and it certainly helps on saving time when you are in a hurry or just feel the need to try something different.

So, has anyone here ever timed how long it took them to play a game of Super Mario, or Phantasy Star, or any other video game? How quickly did you play the game? What techniques or strategies did you use to help you complete the game quickly?

Too fast. Skill before speed is better.

So, here's how speedrunning works. There are multiple categories for runs, and what's being done here is the Any% run, where the runner can use pretty much anything they want to beat the game short of actual cheats- glitches and other 'sploits are fair game, and in many games the Japanese version of the game is preferred because the text displays more quickly. (The Ocarina of Time any% WR run is something like 17m 45 whereas the any% WR Glitchless run is 3h 43m 41s). The Super Mario Bros 100% run is something like 19m 40s.

And I can tell you from trying my own hand at it, speedrunning is probably the single hardest thing you can do in gaming. What you don't see are all the many, many hours spent optimizing shaving off individual frames in order to cut a time by even one second in a game like SMB.
