Happy sounding songs that are actually depressing

Postby MrKite » Sun Aug 30, '15, 2:54 am

These songs sound like sunshine, lollipops, candy canes and rainbows, but if you pay closer attention to the lyrical content, you'll find there is nothing joyful about them.

Distant Early Warning-Rush
One Time, One Night-Los Lobos
Layla-Derek And The Dominos
Electric Avenue-Eddy Grant
Rock The Casbah-The Clash
Down In It-Nine Inch Nails
Fool In The Rain-Led Zeppelin
You Can Call Me Al-Paul Simon
Detroit Rock City-KISS
Jocko Homo-Devo
Knocked Down, Made Small-Was (Not Was)
Born In The U.S.A.-Bruce Springsteen
Semi Charmed Life-Third Eye Blind
99 Luft Balloons-Nena

That's just what I know off the top of my head, but this sounds like an interesting subject.

A lot of Sabaton's catalog could fall into this category. So many I could list, but I'll list some non-Sabaton songs that leap to my mind.

Misplaced - Sonata Arctica
The Greatest Show on Earth - Nightwish (some sections, depending on how you interpret it)
While We Sleep - Insomnium (sounds happy as death metal goes, until you read the lyrics)
Ephemeral - Insomnium (same as above)

There's a few for now.

Only one of these songs that I can remember hearing at all is "Born In The USA" by Springsteen. And, I really don't know many of the lyrics to it, just the "born in the USA" line or chorus, which seems to make some people feel happy when they sing it at patriotic events, holidays, etc., from what I can tell.

"Born in the USA" being used at some political events has actually caused Springsteen to speak out, because the politicians doing so completely miss the point of the lyrics and essentially misuse it, only for the chorus that's so recognizable (and on the surface, happy and patriotic and fit for political rallies). The song itself is VERY political, and not what I would call patriotic. People who sing it at political rallies would do well to actually look up all the lyrics and reconsider.

Wolf hit the nail right on the head. And people to this day still mistake it for an anthem.
