Homeworld Remastered and why you should care.

So, the Homeworld 1 and 2 Remastered collection is being released on the 25th of February, featuring new hi-res textures, better audio quality, and most importantly, it's a version of the Homeworld games that actually runs on modern operating systems. The last part is probably the one you folks should be most concerned about, because Homeworld (well, just generally 1) is probably the last, and maybe only RTS to actually have a story that could be considered really good.

Unfortunately, since the source code for Homeworld: Cataclysm has been lost, they couldn't do a remaster of that. However, the emphasis is that these games are remasters. Not remakes or do-overs, but just updates to the games that take some advantage of the hardware we have now, plus some extra doodads like difficulty levels and fixing of old, long-standing bugs. Here's a look at how Homeworld 1 & 2 look now. (First half is Homeworld 1, second is Homeworld 2)

Relic never had the code in the first place because it was developed for Sierra by a third party, Barking Dog studios, an entirely different team than HW1 and 2. Sierra has long since deleted their copy since the team left, and no one knows if Kerberos, Rockstar, or any of the other places that took on Barking Dog's staff has a copy on hand, but it's not likely.

Losing source code happens more often than you think- Apparently the source code for the original Sonic the Hedgehog is missing too, along with the ones for R-Type 3, Bubble Bobble, Panzer Dragoon Saga, NES Final Fantasy III, Virtua Fighter 2, the original Unreal, and a pretty large number of other games, including many classics (Though in some, even many cases the code was deliberately destroyed, like the CD-i Zelda games).
