I'm playing
Below the Root right now. I'd wager I'm about 1/3 of my way into it. Anyone else remember this game? I played it on the C64 in ye olde days, but it was available for DOS and Apple II as well.
The game was huge (data, not popularity) for its time! Two disks! Whoa!

The gameplay is still really fun and non-linear (very sandbox-y for 1984), but oh my, are the controls not responsive at all. There are a lot of unique game elements, things you'd likely see in current-day indie games, such as environmentalism and veganism (of all things to be touched upon in a video game!). Spoilers ahead: Once you're able to read the minds of animals, you realize why some characters find eating meat highly disturbing.
"Below the Root" has been a neat trip down memory lane. And while I'm here, did you all know the creators of Maniac Mansion are creating a new adventure game? It's called
Thimbleweed Park.
