Interesting story here on some students receiving scholarships from playing video games:

Apparently there are more reasons to play video games these days than just doing it for the fun of it!!

For me, who is a big fan of video games, esport has always had none interest at all ! To Watch people playing videogames ? none interest at all ! Strange for someone who Watch a lot of sports on TV ? Maybe ! But for me this is not a sport here !
But that is great for them :) If those playing love it, it's cool :)

Well it's for League of Legends, which i don't care for. However, I do watch high level fighting game tournaments, and I enjoy watching them much more than real sports. I think it's a bold adjustment for the scholarship giving process. More people than ever are gaming, and if someone takes it to the professional level, then they deserve something for it in my opinion. Fighting games are pretty niche though, and I don't see anything like this happening for fighting game players anytime soon, but they can get sponsored by companies.
