Nintendo closing European HQ, laying off 130 employees

From the article: "Nintendo will close its European headquarters located in Großostheim, Germany, resulting in several redundancies in its workforce. The Wii U and 3DS manufacturer will cut 130 jobs in the process at various European locations and will consolidate its German HQ to Frankfurt.

And just when Nintendo catches a break with Mario Kart 8 sales.

Um. Hm. This doesn't seem like good news for them. Definitely seems odd in light of how well Mario Kart 8 is doing.

Here is a very interesting article talking about Nintendo's situation with this. I kind of skimmed it, but I will look at it more tomorrow.

As I suspected, it appears to be due to the fact that Nintendo is having trouble turning a good profit, particularly in their European market. Not good news for them at all.

Always hate to hear of a company having closings, etc., but especially Nintendo.

Well Nintendo must really be in for some hard times in the near future. Iwata is known for being the kind of guy that only lays people off as a last resort, and sure enough, here come the layoffs. Here's to hoping that the layoffs don't spil over into other regions as well.

My advice to Nintendo would be to keep doing what they are doing with Mario Kart 8. The sales of Mario Kart 8 are pretty good, and I've seen more commercials for Mario Kart 8 than I have for any other game in recent memory. Prior to the Mario Kart 8 commercials I could probably count the Wii U game commercials I've seen one hand. Although I don't watch much TV, so correct me if I'm wrong.
