Phantasy Star Complete Collection: Slasher

Postby Thoul » Fri Oct 5, '12, 12:12 am

A weapon style that went on to become a signature of the Phantasy Star games was introduced for the first time in Phantasy Star II. This is the Slasher, a boomerang-like weapon. While boomerangs are hardly unique to this series, even among fantasy influenced roleplaying games, most Slashers are different from most other implementations of boomerangs in one key way: they are designed to hurt.

As one might surmise from this picture from the game manual, the Slasher is often a bladed weapon. When thrown at someone, the spinning of these blades can cause some serious damage to an unarmored foe. In later incarnations, Slashers would become even more deadly, sometimes manifesting as energy launching devices.

Anna: Of course it's designed to hurt things, it's a weapon.
Rudo: Looks like a kid's toy to me.
Anna: (sweatdrop) If kid's toys had actual sword blades instead of plastic, then yeah. You'd be right. (throws the slasher)
Rolf: Wow, look at it go! (the slasher easily cuts through a watermelon)
Anna: And the best part? It can hit things on the way back, too.
Hugh: (finally leaves the bathroom. He steps right in front of the slasher on its return trip)
Shir: Heya, Hugh! Watch out! You're gonna-
Hugh: Wha- (the slasher removes his head) ;_;

Nice throwing weapon but the question is : how are you going to catch it back "in fly" ? ;)
Like Snorb have said in his parody....even if it's not the head, hard not to cut ourself !!^^

Oh my, Hugh finally comes out of the bathroom and look what a surprise he gets... Too funny indeed!!!

I don't really know how they are able to catch these weapons without getting hurt. It looks like part of it (the middle or curved part which looks brown or yellow here) may not be as slashy as the rest of it and therefore a "safe handle" but once again...I don't know. It's a different matter with the boomerangs though as they don't slash, I think, and can be caught more safely. Interesting weapons.

The slicers were introduced for the first time in Phantasy Star II, but maybe they were inspired in "Silver Tusk" from the previews game.

In any case, there were good points here. The owner would be hurt by retrieving it on the air unless his/her hand was protected. So, maybe the blades are just on the inside-... or maybe when the weapon hit the enemy the owner have to run at the monster's body to pull it off, or maybe the slasher is only fast and dangerous when trowing, but not when coming back.

I like the method Skies of Arcadia used to address this problem. One of the main characters there uses a boomerang weapon too, but she wears this really thick glove on one hand. It looks to have a lot of padding, which should allow her to safely catch the boomerang when it comes back.

Does that Slasher is the same model they still use in Phantasy star IV, in 2284?

Both seem to open and close, but the art is not the same.

I think the basic items are not the same, but storywise Laser slahers should be, because they are archeological items from the ancient civilization of Phantasy Star II.

Open and close ? Nice idea as when the thrower is...throwing it ! It's the "small version" : then the slasher open up, strike the enemy and then came back as it was at the begining :)
But a protective glove is required too !

I wonder where did they put the laser on the slasher?
