Phantasy Star generation:1: Meet the Wizard

Postby Thoul » Fri Jul 20, '12, 12:03 am

In the deepest part of the cave north of a Paseo, our trio of companions has located the young wizard recommended to them by Motavia's governor. Lutz is deep in study when they approach. His concentration is focused on the glowing sphere, which might be a precursor to the Telepathy Ball seen in Phantasy Star IV.

The scene gives us our first good glimpse of the all our main characters from the rear. It also provides a great height comparison, showing us that Odin is nearly a full head taller than Alis. Myau appears to be around the size of a large house cat, nearly reaching the knees of the humans. The Musk Cat's tail, however, clearly matches his ears in being longer than those of real life cats.

Interesting the telemental/telepathy ball connection with PSIV.
Image
Crystal balls always allowed fortune tellers to foresee the future. It happened in PSGaiden as well as in PSIV, where Mito (the fortune teller) also had a crystal ball that was emitting "a strange kind of glow" and allowed her to see the future. Even Damoa (a fortuneteller in PS1) had in his possession a crystal (shape not mentioned).
Image
There was also a fortune teller in PSIII but he only used tarot cards. Fortune teller in PSgaiden could also use tarot cards or inspiration, but it was not as good (clear/accurate) as a crystal ball to see the future.

Regarding to the picture of the image of the day: Maybe Lutz was watching the events (and future events of PSI)... I don't know, I didn't played this version, but for sure he was always finding new and better ways to grant him eternal life (ironically what La Shiec wanted). It was not the first time objects like that were used to store spiritual things.
Image

I also think there were some great improvement over these graphics:
Image
PSI version ------------------- PSII version (ruins)

Regarding to Myau's height: I'm not sure, but Myau seams to be a little shorter in PSgen1 comparing to PSfanbook, the original PS game and PSIV:
ImageImageImage

Btw, I don't know if Myaw continued to wear the bottle on his neck... or if he/she will take it off only after the transformation event, but in the end of the game he/she do not wear it anymore. (I'm also noticing that in this pictures, Myaw has "girly", eyeliner, eyes)
Image
Interesting how different Myaw was drawn here. He looks like a rabbit and her/his ears nor his/her tail don't have that black flaming fade in the end (like Rika's). I don't know if the artist is the same from PSfanbook, but if he is, he improved greatly in just 2 years.

Right : very interesting link ! And thanks for the excellentism addendum, Newsblade !

And Newsblade, Ah Damoa the Soothsayer like he is calling himself in the first one (He is giving "us" a Crystal which can block evil (Lassic) magic : crystall ball ? Isn't it an evident link too ? )
About Myau's height, yes he seems to be a "little" shorter than in the original version.
But the difference is about Odin : look at the end picture of PSI : he is more tha a head taller than Alis(a) and on the PSG1 picture of the meeting with Lutz, the height difference isn't as "high".

I just notice it now, after reading your comment. Man, he IS huge!

I don't know if it is a ball/sphere, because the original (official Japanese) manual don't give us a clue, but it would be nice and it could connect to the telepathy ball as well (in that case this addition from this remake could be scraped).

Prior to playing Generation 1, I personally thought of the Telepathy Ball as being one of the usable items called Spheres in the first game. Spheres could be used in battle to communicate with some monsters, specifically the same ones that the Tele spell works on. I take Tele to be short for Telepathy and since a ball is a sphere, it's not too far off to describe the Spheres as "telepathy balls." I think Spheres and the Telepathy Ball might actually have the same name in Japanese, but I can't recall if that's correct. The Spheres aren't present in G1 - the whole talk to monsters thing was removed - but this scene could be a nod to the item.

I think Myau's shorter appearance is an illusion created by Alis now wearing heels instead of flat soled boots. Those heels are also as much a signature of the new Alis as her twintails. They have to be raising Alis' knees at least an inch or two, so any comparison of Myau's height relative to Alis needs to be adjusted for that. With respect to Odin's knees, Myau looks to be about the same height to me. Although, I think Odin might actually be a little shorter in G1 based on comparing with that PS1 picture. Alis isn't standing straight there, so it's difficult for me to decide.

Alisa: Did Thoul just make fun of my twintails? I think he made fun of my twintails. >_<
Odin: No, he didn't. Look, we gotta get out of here as fast as we can. That's no mere wizard- that's an Esper. He can do terrible things to us, like turn your armor into revealing clothes, or rot my ear off, or turn Myau into a potato.
Myau: What is it with you and potatoes?
Alisa: ...Would revealing clothes make Nekishe like me more?
Myau: Yes.
Odin: (at the same time) No.
Lutz: People, please! I'm trying to maintain my psionic focus by keeping this staff standing straight. My record is forty hours.
Alisa: I can see the string.
Lutz: ...What.
Alisa: You're holding the string in your fingers, and it's tied to the top of the staff and holding it straight up. You big cheater! XD
Lutz: .....Please tell me you have a reason to be intruding on my humble abode.
Odin: You live here? Where's the bed?
Lutz: (points at one corner)
Odin: And your toilet?
Lutz: (points at another corner)
Alisa: Eeeeeeeeeeew! x_X
Myau: That's gross even by my standards.
Lutz: I take it you're not the Mint on Apartments TV crew?
Alisa: Nope! We have an official certified letter from the Governor of Motavia saying you have to come with us! So get in my item pack and we'll be off.

Edit: Just edited this to say this was one of the best jokes, Snorb. 5stars

You are right! Just checked a Japanese site and "US:Tele" is called "Magic Telepath" (マジック・テレパス) and the "US:Sphere" is called テレパシーボール (Terepashii Bouru) "Telepathy Ball".

So, since they dropped that feature of talking to monsters, they decided to compensate with the US:Sphere in this scene. Also, this item was first created for the first "Alex Kidd" game and the staff decided reuse it in Phantasy Star a year latter. In Alex Kidd the description for the Telepathy ball says: "lets you know what other people are thinking" which is very similar to the Japanese description in PS1: "speaks to the hearts of the other to get information".

In any case, the Telepathy Ball could still be a crystal ball filled with the skill/magic "telepath". Lutz telepathy ball was also filled with his will and memories. Maybe it was possible to fill those balls with more than one type of magic.

Myau wrote:About Damoa, that was just a little thought in passing. But where do you hear about his Crystal ball ? I can't remember at all !
In Phantasy Star Gaiden and in Phantasy Star IV fortune tellers have and use their crystal balls. Damoa is also a fortune-teller (according to the Japanese re-translation) and he gives us a crystal item that was in his possession to defeat LaShiec. However, they don't tell us that "Damoa Crystal" is a crystal ball. They don't tell us that it isn't, so it could be... It was a crystal item for sure, but the shape is just a speculation.

Ah you were speaking about the "Crystal" Damoa is giving us after his little quizz ! Ok but that's a "long crystal version" so no crystal ball I think ! You can see it HERE : http://www.pscave.com/ps1/items/protection.shtml
