Phantasy Star Complete Collection: Carbon Emel

Postby Thoul » Mon Jul 16, '12, 12:19 am

In Phantasy Star II, there are two major styles of protective gear used in characters' hands. The female members of Rolf's party, with the exception of Nei, are able to use a small, lightweight style of shield called an emel. The weakest shield available in the game is the Carbon Emel, pictured in this manual illustration. It is unclear as to exactly how these would be used, but it might be worn on the back of the hand. A lady's thumb might poke through that hole, positioning the emel in a way that might allow it to protect the wrist from a strike. However, this would mean the digits on the hand are left exposed, which might be a problem in serious combat.

That looks like it could be very uncomfortable and add little protection in a battle. Jmho.

same as SS : don't seem really protective at all, and mainly inconvevenient for the bearer. And rose for the women ? ;)
Is it only the Carbon Emel that is like that or all the Emels are all of the same shape ? (sure that we didn't know the answer but I'll try to check).

Amy: Oh, it's cute! I like that color. ^_^
Rudo: I dunno. It's just... well, where the hell would you wear that? It's not like a shield or harness armor, Amy.
Amy: Well, there's straps inside. I think you can wear it like a buckler. Oh, I love that color so much. Rolf, can you-
Rolf: (buys one Carbonfiber Emel for Amy) There you go.
Amy: Squee! ^_^ (equips it)
Anna: You're not gonna catch me wearing one of those. I can't throw a boomerang because of the way it covers your hand.
Shir: I know, right? It gets in the way every time I try to use a dagger. >_<
Hugh: You know, using two weapons isn't really such a good-
Shir: (pins Hugh to the wall with a dozen thrown daggers)
Anna: (throws her boomerangs at Hugh, which pin his scarf to the wall)
Hugh: -idea? ;_;
Amy, Anna, and Shir: XD

This is the only one pictured in the Japanese manual. I want to say I've seen a different picture for an emel somewhere while researching the name to confirm that this was the Carbon Emel, but I can't recall for certain now. I would be surprised if they all used this shape.
