Bird Drawing - Andean Condor

Postby Wolf Bird » Fri Dec 2, '11, 2:19 am

This was my Thanksgiving week project, and is going to be a Christmas gift to my brother and his girlfriend. It's an Andean Condor. It's the first one I've done with the bird looking right at you, which makes things a bit more difficult. But I'm fairly happy with it. I couldn't quite get the head to look as rough and textured as I liked without it looking sloppy, but what's there is good enough for me. :)

Great job, CW, you managed to give a good impression of three-dimensions to its head, making it look really nice.

Wow, this is a great piece. I like that you tried something new by having the bird looking out at the viewer. Capturing a proper sense of depth for that can be difficult, but you did a great job. With that white mane (is that the proper term for a bird?), he looks like he's wrapped in an old fashioned cloak. I love that effect.

Thanks! :) The term usually used for birds that have neck ornaments like that is 'ruff'. But I knew exactly what you meant!

Reminds me of a superbe song : El Condor de los Andes : here is the first verse !
"El cóndor de los Andes despertó
con la luz de un feliz amanecer.
Sus alas lentamente desplegó
y bajó al río azul para beber."
And a link to listen to it :

A ruff, huh? Well, that should be an easy term to remember. I had a feeling there was a different term than mane, but that was all I could think of today. At least it got the point across.
