Ramadan

Celebrating all those special times in each year.

Ramadan

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Sat Aug 22, '09, 9:17 pm

I am not too familiar with this so if anyone has any other info regarding this "holy day" or "holiday", then feel free to post it here.

I heard this morning that this is the beginning of Ramadan, I think it is, which is the Muslim Holy Month, or something along those lines. Many Muslim's will be fasting today, etc., I think.

As I said, I am not too familiar with it, since of course I am not Muslim and just don't know too much about it, but I thought it deserved a mention here since it is an important day for many people.

Anyone here celebrating Ramadan? If so, it would be interesting to learn a bit more about it all.

I can answer this for you guys. I've been keeping it from you Fringers for long enough now. I'm a Muslim, and yes, we do begin fasting today, but here where I live, I'll only start tomorrow.

Basically, Ramadaan is the holiest month of the Muslim calendar, and during this 30 day period, we abstain from food, drink and sexual relations from sunrise to sunset. It's also a period of spiritual upliftment and we also take this time to read as much of the Koran/Qu'ran as possible.

So that's it in a nutshell. :)

In one of the places I used to work, the shipping guy was Muslim. I'm Catholic. We used to have such awesome conversations, both being very open. I miss the guy.

So yeah, must be very hard to fast all day for a month, not to mention extremely taxing on the system. You deprive your body of sustenance all day and you compensate just before going to bed, isn't it bad for your health?

As most, if not all religious rites and habits tend to have an historical reason, I'd be curious to know where this fasting rule came from. Does the Coran tell of its origins?
