The 2011 Muskies Awards

Postby Thoul » Fri Feb 25, '11, 8:06 pm

It is my pleasure to announce that we will soon be holding the second annual Fringes of Algo Community Awards ceremonies! The 2011 Muskies Awards will celebrate the many excellent contributions of community members at Fringes over the course of the last year.

The winners of these awards will be nominated and voted on by you, the community members. Nominations will be held March 13 - 20. The top nominees for each category will be placed into polls on the forum, where you will be able to vote for your favorites. Voting will take place during the dates of March 21 - 28. The winners will be officially announced on April 1, the 14th anniversary of Fringes of Algo.

We will have a number of categories for the awards. Each community member will be allowed to nominate up to 5 entries for each category. Details on how to nominate entries will be announced at the beginning of the nomination period.

To be eligible for participation in the 2011 Muskies, members and content must meet the following criteria as of March 13, 2011:
  • Content must have been submitted or actively updated between March 7, 2010 and March 13, 2011.
  • Content must be posted somewhere on Fringes of Algo.
  • Artwork must be hosted directly on Fringes. Offsite works, such as those hosted on Photobucket and linked in a topic here, are not eligible.
  • Be a community member in good standing (not banned or suspended).

The categories that will be available in the 2011 Muskies are listed below. Others categories may be announced when nominations are opened. I am still open to suggestions of additional categories.

  1. Best Single Chapter Fan Fiction
This award recognizes your top choice of any story posted in the Fan Fiction section that consists of only one chapter.
  2. Best Multiple Chapter Fan Fiction
This award recognizes your top choice of any story posted in the Fan Fiction section that consists of more than one chapter (or post).
  3. Best Original Writing
This award recognizes your top choice of any work posted in the Original Writings section. Unless more Original Writings are posted by the beginning of nominations, nominations will not be accepted for this award and the four existing works compose the ballot.
  4. Best Fan Artwork
This award recognizes your top choice for outstanding fan artwork. Please note this is for an individual piece of artwork, not an artist's body of work as a whole. The Muskies Eligible Fan Artwork Gallery displays all artworks that may be nominated for this award.
  5. Best Original Artwork
This award recognizes your top choice for outstanding original artwork. Please note this is for an individual piece of artwork, not an artist's body of work as a whole. The Muskies Eligible Original Artwork Gallery displays all artworks that may be nominated for this award.
  6. Best Artist
This award recognizes your top choice for an artist that has displayed great skill in a visual medium. For this award, please do consider an artist's body of work as a whole.

Eligible members for this award are (as of this posting): Atlinsmere, Caged Wolf, chaz360, H-Man, Kaloes, Lucas, meteor9, Solar, vontrapp, Xander
  7. Best Original Character
This award acknowledges a remarkable original, fan created character. Fan characters have appeared in fan fiction, artwork, games, roleplaying, and other works shared with the community. The Original Characters thread can be used to promote your original characters for nomination.
  8. Best Other Fan Work
This award recognizes fan creations in the areas of fan games, music remixes, and videos. Eligible items can be found in the Fan Games, Music, & Video forum (in any unlocked topic updated between March 7, 2010 and March 13, 2011).
  9. Best Forum Game
This award recognizes your choice for the top game in the Forum Games and Roleplay sections.
  10. Best Introduction Topic
This award recognizes your choice for the top topic created between March 7, 2010 and March 13, 2011 in the Introductions section.
  11. Best Avatar
This award recognizes your choice for the member who has the most impressive avatar.
  12. Best Signature
This award recognizes your choice for the member who has the most interesting signature.
  13. Most Successful Discussion
This award recognizes your choice for the best discussion topic on the forums. Non-discussion topics or topics that fit into another award category (such as Forum Games or Fan Fiction topics) are not eligible for this award.
  14. Most Enthusiastic Fringer
This award recognizes a member of the community who has shown a great enthusiasm for some activity during the last year. Whether it's obsessing about a certain game, posting news stories, entertaining with random skits, or some other activity, this is something the member does often and does well. (Fringes Staff is not eligible for this award.)
  15. Fringer of Excellence
This award recognizes an outstanding member who you feel best illustrates the qualities that the community values. Kindness, sharing knowledge in a productive manner, things like that. You don't have to be a Phantasy Star expert to receive this award - just a great community member. (Fringes Staff is not eligible for this award.)
  16. Staff Member of the Year
This award is intended to acknowledge the staff member who you feel is deserving of special honor due to their contributions to the community and its livelihood. Nominations are not excepted for this award. The ballot will consist of Caged Wolf, Lucas, and Silver_Surfer1.

Anyone that would like to display additional signatures or avatars they have used during the past year for the Best Signature or Best Avatar categories can do so in a thread created for that purpose.

Winners will receive bragging rights, a notation of excellence on their member profile/topic/whatever, a special Muskies Award banner, and maybe other prizes that have yet to be determined.

Now, I'm a little new here, so I'd like to ask in what way does the content have to be updated today? Do I need to tweak the author's note in my fanfic to say I want it to be considered for this year's awards? Or is the fact that I submitted it a couple days ago close enough?
In some stories, the princess is her own hero....

That's March 7 of last year, not today. ;) Since you've just recently posted your stuff for the first time, you don't have to do anything else.

The updated clause is mainly for fan fiction (or other stuff) started before March 7, 2010. If a new chapter has been added to a story since then, that story is eligible for this year's Muskies.

Cool. I hope my story's good enough for nomination- I just got blown away by someone else's fanfic today.

A new category has been added to the list of Muskies Awards:
Best Original Character
This award acknowledges a remarkable original, fan created character. Fan characters have appeared in fan fiction, artwork, games, roleplaying, and other works shared with the community. The Original Characters thread can be used to promote your original characters for nomination.

Thanks to Lucas for suggesting this category!

I guess I should once again post up what I have available for your consideration for a Muskie this year!

Phantasy Star I
Zero Hour- Iria Ashleigh, Chaz Ashleigh's descendant, travels back in time from the PSOnline era to kill LaShiec. Consider this to be the Star Trek '09 of Phantasy Star.

Phantasy Star II
Heartbeat, Heartbreak- The Valentine's Day 2011 classic! Hugh and Shir have a fun Valentine's Day dinner, Rolf and Amy... umm, yeah.

Wind Dance- An inner look at everyone's favorite thief, Shilka Gold.

Phantasy Star III
Ripple Effect- An alternate take on the Alisa III, following Prince Ayn Landen's journey to stop the second coming of the Devastation Wars. (Note: Chapters Two through Four are eligible.)

Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Still has nothing written by me, because I don't think I can do the game justice.
Read my social stuff!
The ramblings of an oldish geezer on Facebook.
@SnorbESnorb on Twitter. The "E" stands for "Everything."

Play my games!
The ArrrPG - A game I made about being a pirate. This be a first draft, matey! Though it plays just fine, clap yer eyes on th' eventual Revised an' Expanded Edition and you'll be pleased, by thunder!

Nakama: A Card Game of Magical Girls - A completely un-playtested card game about being a magical girl.

Well, excuse me while I defy all laws of logic and common sense and do it anyway.

That's such a good idea, that I think I'll borrow it for a little bit. I hope you don't mind, Snorb. This list is ordered by the original file creation date, not release date.

Seed's Project A little foray into Seed's role as a father to a young Rika. No reviews from this site yet.
Black Clothes(PSIV) Sequel to "Seed's Project", it's time for an adolescent Rika to choose her new outfit.... No reviews from this site yet.
Rappy(PSIV) Mr. Sekreas of Torinco is known for his love for animals. The farmer he works for, not so much. No reviews from this site yet.
Neifirst(PSII) Neifirst is born into a terrible world... what's to become of the poor girl?
Test Flight(PSII) You have been given the chance of a lifetime- to become one of the only civilians to be accepted into the team responsible for testing every spaceship built in Mota. Will you survive your first flight?
Hydrofoil(PSII) Sequel to "Test Flight". A friend convinces you to sneak out of work for a little harmless fun. What could go wrong?
Armorer's Son(PSIV) Hahn's father doesn't approve of his decision to go to Piata Academy.... No reviews from this site yet.
Separate Ways(PSII) Sequel to "Neifirst". An escaped Numan is out for blood, even though the girl in her head desires only peace....

Regardless of whether you consider any of these stories to be worthy of your nomination, I do desire more feedback on them- I've marked which one's have yet to draw criticism on this site.
In some stories, the princess is her own hero....
