Blockbuster Video

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Thu Feb 25, '10, 10:21 pm

Blockbuster Video is closing some of their stores:

I wonder if movie rental places are about to become almost extinct. This is the second movie rental store that I have heard is having problems.

Are people just not renting movies anymore, or what????

People are renting them from Netflix, cable TV service or streaming them online. The old movie rental store is something I'm afraid is about to become a relic of the past.
Next Pokemon game(s): Pearl
Last finished Pokémon game: Shield
Other games: Skyrim Special Edition (Switch), Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Switch & PS4), Okami (Switch & PS4)
Other gaming goals: completing a Living Pokedex (minus some event Pokes) and going through at least 1 game per generation

Yup, it seems like the greater convenience of online access is going to kill these stores. It'll be even worse once Netflix or similar services are on all the game consoles. The only way the brick and mortar rental stores will be able to survive is to come down on prices a lot. Who's going to pay $5 to $9 for a rental when you can get the same thing for less, maybe even free, online or at a library?

The market was over saturated out my way. We had at least 5 within a 10 mile radius. 2 of them closed late last year and I got a couple good deals there. I don't think it will be long before the others go too.

I hadn't thought about getting some possible good deals with some of these stores closing, but I'll have to remember that. Thanks for the tip.

Blockbuster Video has now filed for bankruptcy:

They will be closing many of their stores.

This might be an opportunity to find some great deals on close out stuff, etc. at some of these stores.

Hm, I bet they'll close the one in my town. It's the only video rental store we have in the area now, but it can't be doing very well. The economy has hit people hard here and Blockbuster is pretty expensive on their charges, so I guess they won't last. It seems like the only used games they ever have for sale are sports stuff, too.

I have noticed a Blockbuster vending machine next to one of the grocery stores, though. It only has like six movies in it, but I suppose they'll be trying to complete with Redbox that way now.

The Blockbuster up my street is closing, which isn't too much of a surprise. I think they're having some deals so I might have to check it out sometime this week. Its pretty sad since I always used to go to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video when I was younger.

Did you get any good deals at that store?

The latest bit of news in the ongoing struggles of Blockbuster isn't good. Blockbuster has put itself up for sale. They've received an offer of $290 million from their creditors. The sale has to be approved by the courts, but it probably will be approved. Unless another buyer comes it, this could be the final nail in Blockbuster's coffin. I imagine the creditors will want to shut the company down, given how unprofitable it has proven.
