The Difference of Megid

Postby Celeith » Thu Dec 30, '10, 11:58 pm

After playing through both PSII and PSIV I always liked the aspect that both Eusis and Chaz both got Megid. On the other hand I didn't enjoy that Megid did damage back to your party members when Eusis used it.

Mainly I always figured that the difference between Eusis' Megid and Chaz's Megid was due to the fact that maybe Eusis couldn't get over Nei's death thus his anger caused the technique to backfire, while Chaz had come to terms with his anger and sadness after his battle with Re-Fazes illusion thus the power of Megid couldn't backfire and would actually deal its true damage to his foes. What do you think?

That's a very reasonable theory, in my opinion. I agree that the difference could easily come from Chaz coping better with his loss than Rolf. Chaz had the benefit of being taught how to channel his anger by Re-Faze, but Rolf harnessed that power without instruction. A novice attempting a technique without the benefit of instruction from a master should have more difficulty controlling the forces unleashed.

I like to think of Rolf's Megid as being like the version in PSIII. In PSIII, Megido is shown via cutscene to radiate out from the body of the user. It would strike everything around him, friend or foe. I see Chaz's version as being better directed in release.

I'll buy it. It would be interesting, though, to see how your theory would apply to PSIII, but alas, we'll never find out how/if Megid(o) affects the rest of the party.

As is always the qualm with PSIII, there isn't a ton of character development, so it's a little trickier to connect it to the amount of anger the characters have. Is hatred of Dark Force enough to fuel Megid, or does there need to be more? Everyone always talks about Sean's quest being the most tragic, as he loses his home and his parents at a young age - would his Megid be more powerful since he had more negative emotions to draw upon?

I think Megid in PSII is much more interesting than PSIV. Megid in PSIV is just to keep the connections with the other games.
If this theory is true, it only makes PSIV worse.
A person only sees and hears what he wants to see and hear and disregards the rest.

The thing with the PSIII version of Megid(o) is that it can't be cast directly and it has the most destructive power of the three. This led me to a theory that the caster has to learn how to control and use the spell.

Rolf gains the Megid technique after reaching level 35 but is never "taught" it. So maybe he lacks the ability to control it like Chaz who is taught the spell. Also Chaz is traveling with Rune who may have knowledge about the spell and is able to teach him how to control it. With more training perhaps Rolf, and 3rd generation heroes, could learn to use it like Chaz.

By the time of PSO it's so well understood that it's been "watered down".

Just my crackpot theory on it. I think all the others are just as good.
