Great Games No One Knows

Remembering the games of yesteryear.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Just Breed for the NES.

The recent fan translation is excellent, though spell names take some navigating, and it has what I feel is a great combination of gameplay and storyline. Well, let's face it, the overarching plot is cliche, but where this game shines is the characters. It has wonderful characterization.

The basics... Just Breed is an SRPG by Enix, it was their final game released for the NES and it is the largest NES game ever made.

If you want to have a look at it, take a peek at this walkthrough but be aware that it, of course, contains spoilers. Just Breed is definitely a lost gem, easily the best SRPG for the NES in my opinion and one of the best RPGs of its era.

Another old overlooked favorite of mine is Nightshade for the NES. It's a very unique combination of action, adventure, roleplaying, and puzzle. The plot is fairly unique for its era, it stars an 'up and coming superhero' who is investigating the death of the city's previous superhero while exploring the city and fighting crime. One of my favorite features is that each time the main character 'dies' in battle, he awakens to find himself in a progressively more difficult trap (a puzzle); 1960s Batman sort of deals. It's still one of the most unique ways of handling 'multiple' lives that I've seen in a game. Eventually the traps got far too difficult for me to escape, at least. Very difficult game that challenges in a lot of ways but it was a lot of non-linear fun.

This is a little more unusual of an entry, since this is a board game. However, since it's electronic I thought, what the hey, I'll post it here, anyway. So...

Who had or played Dark Tower? http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30/dark-tower

I have a lot of fond memories of that game. I think my brother still has our original game. I wonder if it works... I'll have to ask him. Man, it was such an awesome game. I always got too carried away haggling at the bazaar and ended up with nothing. Oops.

I've never seen that one, but I bet I would have loved it as a kid. I used to love board games, but it was hard to get anyone to play them with me.

It was really fun, and the best part was that it took a while to play, too. Now that I'm thinking about this, I think I might call my brother up and organize a game with all of our old friends. That could be fun. Top it off with some MST3K and it's the perfect evening of geekery.

I've always been surprised how few people have played the Breath of Fire series. It's a great RPG series that started in the early 1990s on the Super Nintendo, and made it all the way up to the PlayStation 2. All five games have had North American releases, so there's not really any reason why my friends, who enjoy RPGs, haven't played it. Granted, the last game in the series was a total flop, but it's still a great series nonetheless.

I loved the first two Breath of Fires, but for some reason the third was never able to keep my interest. I skipped the last two after being disappointed with that one. I should give the another run sometime...

Oh, I'll also need to add Phantasy Star to that list. I've talked to so many people who just say "Phantasy what?". Or, they are first introduced to the series by Phantasy Star Online or Phantasy Star Universe, and you just know that if you introduce them to the classic games, they're not going to like them because the classic games are nothing like the online ones. I have the same problem whenever I show Final Fantasy I - VI to people who tell me that their favorite is VII.

I've just passed through this topic and remembered some memorable games I've played a lot, like the less-known first person shooters.

I'd like to add not a game that no one knows, but a game that is kinda forgotten, though it had some success at its time. It is Betrayal of Krondor for PC. It is a stunning RPG, with outstanding storytelling and character interaction. The game got me addicted to it as Phantasy Star did.
A person only sees and hears what he wants to see and hear and disregards the rest.

Sold my copy on Ebay back around 2002 or 2003 for $120. It's considered to be the rarest 80's fantasy board game. Mine was even missing a few pieces and I still got that much for it!

So many great games listed here! I love Wonder Boy In Monster World, my favorite Genesis game that doesn't have Phantasy or Shining in the title :-p and Golvellius is my 2nd favorite Master System game, only behind Phantasy Star.

One game series that I feel needs to be mentioned is the Ys series, in my opinion, the most underrated game series of all time. The earlier games in the series were fairly simple, they were top-down view action RPGs where you attacked by simply running into the enemies, that made the games challenging and required quite a bit of level grinding.
My favorite game in the series is the black sheep and most fans don't like it, but it was the first one I ever played and I loved it, and that is Ys III: Wanderers From Ys. In English it was released for Genesis, SNES, and TurboGrafix-16, I feel that the Genesis is the best version. Ys III changes the format and instead is a side-scrolling action-RPG which can now be described as Metroidvania. The story is fairly typical, the wandering hero gets to a new town and while helping people ends up having to save the world, but there are plenty of plot twists and heart-wrenching moments to keep it interesting.
One thing that stands out in the Ys series, especial Ys III, is the music, every track in the game is intense, fully orchestrated pieces that never stop pumping your adrenaline. Here is a sample of the music:

Ys III was recently remade for PSP with the name Ys: The Oath In Felghana, The remake is fully 3D and beautifully flows between top-down and side-scrolling views. The music in the remake has also been fully remixed.
