Video Review of Phantasy Star: A Trip Down Nostalgia Lane

Postby Tanith » Tue Oct 26, '10, 4:53 am

There's not much new anyone can say when reviewing Phantasy Star I these days. I think most gamers get its place in RPG history as a trailblazing game. However, this is a really nice, heartfelt review of PSI. I'll also add that this reviewer states on his website that PSI is his favorite video game.

To you "youngsters" :p that played the game first through emulation, you might think this review is a bit boring. At first I even thought the reviewer went on a bit too much in reminiscing his old neighborhood. By the time I was done watching, however, I was really into that fond sense of nostalgia I get sometimes when I think of my old console-playing days, when I'd play a game until it overheated and froze, when all of the neighborhood kids would get together the day after Christmas (or soon thereafter) and find out who got what game or new console and then take turns playing them together and swapping them (which led to many disputes over where the borrowed games went), when I'd beg Mom to let me play two more battles, just two; please on PSII so I could finally buy the Laconiawhatever, then I'd clean my room, I promise.

Ah, good times. Anyway, enjoy the vid.

He does some good reviews this bloke, I gotta a lot of respect for the effort he puts into them too. Not to mention out of all of the thousands of games out there Phantasy Star is his number one, and it made a big impact on his life. Gives me a warm happy feeling that I also own an original copy of this great game.

Thanks for posting Tanith.

What I consider priceless about this video is the nostalgia feeling we all have in relation to something. Many of us have a deep sense of nostalgia with Phantasy Star. Other people have their own nostalgias and that is a funny thing about the human nature: many people would see us here and wonder why we still talk about a game series that, for many (those who are not into the online games), ended more than 15 years ago. On the other hand, we would also consider foolish the love some people have for other game series or cartoons or movies, etc. The point is that Phantasy Star is part of us and, regardless of what people may say or think, we will always hold a soft spot for it into our hearts.

I saw a previous video this guy made (in 2 parts) about the overall Phantasy Star series. Yes he mentionned back then Phantasy Star was his number 1 game, I'll go check now is more detailled review about the first game

EDIT: Yup, he still got the same passion. Really cool review. Thanks :)
