If they wanted to do a PSV in the vain of the classic series, I think it'd be best to have a 16-bit feel to it. So I agree with hugues on that it would be perfect for WiiWare and similar online services. However, I also agree that there doesn't need to BE a PSV. PSIV wrapped the story up nicely, and if there is ANY storyline continuity, reviving a villain who was destroyed is something on my game (and fanfiction) deadly sin list that pretty much ALWAYS turns me off instantly.

I still think that the story of Evil can never truly be defeated is a good one.

For example you defeated the profound darkness which was a trapped being..... OK DF was a product of the evil that creature felt, now it is gone the properties of the system itself would need to find a way to fill that void and return the balance that existed and DF could then begin to be fed/created by the evil that exists within the inhabitants of the system......

The stories can never truely end as you still have Rycros around Mota's need to redevelop the continuing struggle to rediscover the lost areas of Dezolis..... the list goes on ;)

I'm with CW. For one, yes, constantly reviving bad guys can be a bit repetitive. Then there's the fact that if they went and brought back the whole profound darkness thing I just feel that any reasons they could come up with would seem pretty weak and kind of crappy as well.

Then there's the fact that PS IV tied it all up over a decade ago. As far as I'm concerned, it's done with. Let it be. Nevermind the fact that a modern RPG just wouldn't be able to give you the same feel as the originals did.

In my opinion PSIV burned all bridges in order to make a PSV. Of course they could make up any story, but when they decided to make the cause of all evil an entity (Dark Force/Profound Darkness), they limited very much the scope of the series.

When they made a Dark Force that returns each 1,000 years, they limited the action in series to one installment each 1,000 years only. When they made Profound Darkness, they made a root of all evil in the entire universe, so, in order to make PSIV more "epic", they sacrificed the whole series since previous PS heroes became just low level heroes which defeated a weak Dark Force (in PS4 they defeat 3, piece of cake) and the next PSs wouldn´t be able or strong, since they defeat the root of all evil in the entire Universe and everyone should live forever in happiness after that.

PS III establishes that evil can still exist without the Profound Darkness. The events of that game, especially the Japanese version that is 1000 years later than the English, show Dark Force existing decades after the battles of PSIV. Even if we take PSIV's story as meaning that there can be no more Dark Forces created in the future, that one is still out there.

Not all evil has to come from the Edge, either. Look at the bosses of PS Adventure and Gaiden. They have no connection to Dark Force or the PD. If Sega wanted to revive the series, they could use a new type of villain like that.

Seeing all the ideas and topics brought up in this thread keeps reminding me that I should start working on my Phantasy Star d20 idea. (Yes, I know there's already one. It's like eight years old and rather... not-so-greatly written. =p)

Remember also that a Dark Force existed on Earth and came to Algo and those earthmen caused ps 2..

Maybe that means that the Ohario and Aina deal on Palma was the couldn't defeat that 1000 year period Dark Force so it escaped upon the World Ships. Japanese PS 3 New Mota has this..

So it comes full circle with the Palmans on Palm being unable to defeat Dark Force and Rolf and Co able to.

I mean come PS 3.. Dark Force was defeated and just laid sealed by a sword while feeding off Rulakir. Soul and body can be seperated in most japanese games/anime. Growlanser V and VI do it quite well with the screaper queen.

Dark Force with the Earthmen fed that way to. Alis beat a Dark Force that Lashiec summoned hence it was prolly weaker.

I hate to say this but.. It could also mean that a Prophallus can mature into a Dark Falz by escaping and feeding off negative emotions.

Besides, Force of evil still exist, in the hidden nei dungeons, on Rykros.. Someone could create a bioweapon based on Dark Cells(Sound familiar?)

Lots of possibilities can exist without using Dark Force/Profound Darkness.

The Great Light wandered to another galaxy to die, what if her body mutated from fighting in that conflict then came back to Algo?

Mm.. possibilities

Of course everyone has his own view on the blanks left by the series (and every fictional history) and they are all valid.

I understand if you take the Japanese dates, PSIII would be after PSIV, so you could assume that Dark Force still exists after Profound Darkness is defeated. But, for me, it is just something people who made PSIV wanted to die as if it didn't exist. Even the compendium doesn't mention anymore PSIII in timeline, they just don't care. I think they made the ending of PSIV considering that once Profound Darkness is dead, the whole Dark Force thing is that "and they lived in happiness for the eternity".

Of course they could pick up from somewhere else if they wanted to continue the story, but I don't think they really intended to do so, that is why PSIV closes almost all possibilities. Anyway, I don't think the team which made PSIV would like to pick up from PSIII to make PSV.

More fan ideas are always great to see. :)

But then there's the possibility of a time loop from that one Earth ending in PSIII... so that might have been connected to the Profound Darkness.

Rykros is an interesting idea. I'm not sure what kind of monsters might be left there, but I could see someone from Algo wanting to go explore the planet and finding something nasty hidden on it.

That's not a good basis for dismissing PSIII. The Compendium's timeline gives PSIV the same treatment it gives PSIII. Some backstory events that happened around PSII are mentioned, but the game events are omitted entirely from the book's timeline. If one assumes "they just don't care" about PSIII because of that, the same would have to apply to PSIV.

Maybe, but I wouldn't rule it out entirely. They considered basing PSIV on PSIII. Even though they eventually passed on the idea, it shows they considered PSIII seriously during the development process.

Of course, we probably wouldn't see the PSIV team working on PSV anyway. :( A few key members might return, but the PSV team would probably consist of mostly new people.

In the compedium, where they stop the timeline, they write something like And, after that, the "Millennium" continues..., which means for me that the rest of the story is told by Phantasy Star: At the end of the Millenium, aka PSIV.

In my opinion, when they quote Millenium, they are clearly making reference to PSIV.
