New Achievement Upgrades

Postby Thoul » Thu Aug 12, '10, 4:03 am

As many members will soon be noticing, if you haven't already, there are many new Achievements now available. The display of Achievements in member profiles has also been upgraded. We also have a new Leaderboard displaying our top Achievement earning members.

The new Achievements are all based on different kinds of interaction around the boards. I won't say what interactions exactly, because I want it to be something of a surprise. Suffice to say, you'll be seeing them appear as you are active in the community.

Some of the new Achievements will be applied retroactively on some conditions, while others may not. For instance, if there is a series of Achievements for creating a topic or post in a certain section, those might be awarded retroactively on the creation of a new topic in the section. This depends on the individual Achievement and how the calculations for awarding it works.

The display of Achievements in the member profiles has been upgraded. Here's Atlinsmere's profile as an example. There's a neat little hover effect displaying the details of each Achievement.

More Achievements will be added in the future, including more advanced versions of the Achievements added in this update. Most of the hard work for adding future Achievements is done now. I just have to whip up lots of icons. ;)

EDIT: Added Leaderboard link at first paragraph.

YAY! I feel important! Come to think of it, this isn't the first time I've been used as an example... Oh well, not that it matters to me. =P

I like this achievement system so far, I just expect that I'm going to be earning quite a bit over the next few days, will it be forced? Hopefully not, after all, it isn't an Easter Egg hunt. =P

These Achievements are all automatic. Like achievements in a game, they just happen when you complete certain tasks in the boards. There will probably be a rush of them for several of us over the first few days, but there are also some that will take longer to unlock.

As for the example... well, you just make a good one. ;) You're very active on the community, so you have a good number of achievements already.

Just out of curiosity. Does this include stuff we did in the past? If so, then I assume it has a lot of calculating to do as it has to check over the entire board.

For some Achievements, past work is considered. For others, it isn't. It depends on how much work is involved in the calculation of the Achievement.

For example, let's look at two types. Say there's an Achievement for posting a certain number of topics in a certain forum. The next time a person posts a new topic in that forum, the board will check to see if they have posted enough topics to get the achievement, including their past posts.

The catch here is that check for the Achievement won't happen until that person posts a new topic in that forum, though. This would actually be a problem for certain achievements in certain areas that we might not post in much (Introductions), so some of those may be handled in another way in the future, after the initial rush of achievement earning is over.

For another type of Achievement, let's say there's something that has to be done at least once a day for a certain number of days to earn an achievement. It's really hard to check that over a period of the last three and a half years, so past deeds don't count for this kind of achievement.

Yay, another totally useless, yet fun feature to keep me hyperactive in the forums.
