Phantasy Star Deluxe Translation Project

Postby Thoul » Fri May 14, '10, 1:10 am

This topic is for discussing the effort to translate Phantasy Star: Deluxe Edition. I will update this post as new info is available in the future.

English Translation
You can find the latest patch here: Phantasy Star: Deluxe Edition English

The script used in this patch is based on the script from the original English Phantasy Star release. However, there are some changes from that script. Most of these are due to internal code differences of the game. A few lines of dialogue have special handling issues that make it necessary to rephrase those lines.

One example of that would be the result of the Trap spell when no trap is present. The second line of the generic "there's nothing special here" search message is also used on the Trap result, so both messages had to be reworded in order to avoid some nonsense like "There was no trap. anything special about it."

Some characters also have increased or decreased dialogue in the Chinese mobile version compared to the English Master System script. A means of adding or removing lines to specific characters has not yet been determined, so sometimes it was necessary to trim down or expand the original English lines to fit the available space for a given character's dialogue.

Some grammar corrections have been made to the script, but not in cases where the grammar is meant to represent patterns of speech.

This version allows item, spell, and enemy names to have longer lengths than the Master System. This advantage has been in many cases.

Text Dumps
Here is most of the text from the Chinese version of the game. It includes item names, monsters, and most dialogue (a few lines are omitted).
PS Deluxe Text Dump --- Google Translate of the Text Dump
I used these as a guide to determine where the English text needed to be inserted. Some of Google's version makes little sense (perils of using automatic translation), but it does help a lot.

Translating to Other Languages
I cannot translate the game to any language other than English. However, if a translation to another language is provided to me, I can insert that into the game. Details on that are included in the English patch download.

Other Notes
Also of some interest is that many of the images within the game use English names, some of which differ from previous translations. I have not used any of these in the patch, but I thought some of you might find them interesting.

Alis = Arisa
Myau = Myau
Odin = Tyron (but Tiron is also used twice!)
Lutz = Rutsu
Air Castle = Aero Castle
Hapsby = Habusupy
Lassic = Rashiiku
Dark Falz = Dark Farusu
Casba/Blue Dragon = dragonwise

Google did a pretty good job translating. I was able to figure out a few people and places pretty quickly:

Barlow Litas - Parolit
Jiaminitie - Camineet
Xien, Xi En - Scion
Bayemalai - Baya Malay
Dr. Lu Beino - Luveno
Abbey Village - Abion
Elugeer - Algol
Lakeniya - Laconia
La * - Le Shiec
Basai Ao - Paseo
Baertebo - Bortevo
Houzeau - Uzo
Klein - Guaron
Tower Block Chrona - Corona
Ethiopian Village - Sopia
Taji Mu - Tajim
Pacius Shield - Mirror Shield (I'm assuming Pacius is Perseus.)

I'm working on the rest of the names, but I don't have a lot of time right now.

It goes back and forth on Alis's name. Sometimes she's Elisha and sometimes she's Elisa.

I've messed around with the game some tonight. A translation of this is possible. I have successfully replaced a few snippets of text with English equivalents. There are some attachments in this post that display the results.

There may be a good bit of room to expand the text in the game when translating, if necessary. In the next attachment, I have the first two text boxes from the Nero's death sequence. I was able to get all of the guards' English speech in two lines on the first box, where the Chinese speech used all four.

There is some text in the game that I can't be able to alter. None of it is actually in the game, though. It's a "no music" error message, advertising for the website that sells the Chinese version, that sort of thing. And of course the logo, which is an image and not text. I suppose it could be replaced with a different image, though.

As a proof of concept, here's an IPS patch. It will translates slightly more than what you see in the images on this post, but it will help a little of anyone interested in playing the game.

For those interested, here is the first full game English IPS patch. It can be applied to the game using the Lunar IPS program.

This patch is basically just the Google Translate results of the text dump, with a few edits to match the original English PS1. As such, everything is translated, but a lot of it may not make sense. The game should be reasonably playable, though.

Most of the game menus are accurately translated, other than the title screen. If anyone tries this and finds something in the menus that needs attention, I'd love to hear about that. Many of the names in the text have been changed to match the original English game, when I could easily determine them. Let me give a big thanks to Tanith here, because she saved me a lot of headache on that with her post above.

There is still a lot of work to be done before this translation is totally complete, but this makes a good start.

There's a new version of the translation patch. You can find the download link in the first post of this topic.

This version of the patch has almost everything up until Eppi Forest changed to a near match of English PS1's script. The game is much more playable now, though there are still sections that need work. Any feedback is welcome, especially on any status effects I might have missed so far.

Time for a little update. I've decided to hold off on releasing another patch until I've gotten the game at least 90% translated. The good news is that it shouldn't take long to reach that point. All that remains at this point is a few monsters, status effects, one or two items, and some of the NPC dialogue that occurs in and after Baya Malay.

Ok, a new patch version, 2.0, is up. See the first post for the link. In this version, the entire storyline is properly translated to English. Again, I had to tweak some dialogue for space or different handling the game, but it's fully playable in English that will make sense now.

I'm calling the patch about 98% complete with this release. There are a few remaining snippets of text that I didn't see in the game and should be properly copied over from the SMS version some time. Most players won't encounter these during a standard play of the game, so they're low priority. I may track them down later, I may not. I don't really want to spend a ton of time on things like visiting Tajim before Lutz on both versions of the game for four lines of text, so probably not.

For all intents and purposes, this is the final version of the patch barring any minor updates.

Sorry about that, some recent maintenance removed a file from the site incorrectly. It's fixed now. Thanks for letting me know about the problem.
