Was there really a gas leak?

Postby Thoul » Tue Sep 11, '07, 6:46 pm

When Rolf and his friends go to Dezo in PSII, they find a some old newspapers that say there was an evacuation due to a gas leak. Now, I'm sure the evacuation really happened, but do you believe there truly was a gas leak?

I was thinking about how Mother Brain influenced and subtly guided the Algoians into a position where they were almost helpless to stop her. She did this over time, with steps like the bans on sea and space travel. I believe it would be within Mother Brain's power, and fit with her m.o., to fake a gas leak or report one when it never happened. She could have done this to get all the Palmans on Dezoris to return to Palma or Motavia, where she would have more control over them. Dezoris seems almost immune from her touch.

What do you think?

Sounds like a solid theory. Makes sense that there'd be a "gas leak" to scare the palmans from Dezolis.

This would also explain why Lutz went there to escape Mother Brain.

 This isn't something I've ever thought of before, but I think you're right on with this assessment, Thoul. When I played the game again a few years back I remember thinking that if there's a gas leak here in Skure, why are my characters unaffected? No one was there to fix the problem, so why would it stop? Shouldn't it look like Sopia in PSI? With no physical signs of a leak, I'd vote for expansion of Mother Brain's control. It fits with everything else we're told about MB.

Yes, that's a good point. There should still be some gas there, but there's no trace of it. And the Musk Cats still live there, even after ten years, so they should be affected too.

I believe it would be within Mother Brain's power, and fit with her m.o., to fake a gas leak or report one when it never happened.

I think there really was a gas leak. While MB can perfectly report a fake gas leak, she can also provoke it like she have done with Rolf's spaceship accident in AW 1274 (not proved though); Gaira satellite in AW 1284 and the flood of Mota's main continent (although this was done through Nei1st). She doesn’t seem to be the type of bluffing... when she wants to do, she does, no matter how many lives she takes.

Ofcourse this is only my opinion, let's see what Must cats have to say:

Yes... it seams there was gas leak after all.

I was thinking about how Mother Brain influenced and subtly guided the Algoians into a position where they were almost helpless to stop her. (...) She could have done this to get all the Palmans on Dezoris to return to Palma or Motavia, where she would have more control over them. Dezoris seems almost immune from her touch.

I believe MB (or Earthman) has a plan since the beginning which was the elimination of all non-earthmen humans (palmans) who were the rulers of Algol. In order to do that she had to concentrate them, in a few places as possible. This had been achived in AW1284 (excluding rebels which had spaceships) after performing the following steps:

She did this over time, with steps like the bans on sea and space travel.

Step1
AW 1234: This was the first time she forbids something. It was related to water traveling (I can include hydrofoils, scuba diving and every aquatic transportation/protection). Her true objective was, no doubt, related to "the great flood" which can only be done on the mainland.

Once all doors were closed in Climatrol from inside the only opening would be the vacuum cleaner that sucks ocean water, but since hydrofoils are forbidden and scuba equipment seams to not exist also, it was impossible, not only to stop climatrol of doing that but also to escape the flood. The only way to escape the flood was living outside the main land (like Uzo, for instance) but now you can't get there (hydrofoilds are forbidden), hiding on a hydrofoil (same) ore leave Mota (hmm... that could be arranged).

Concluding: every one that lived in Motavia was aggregated on the only continent that can be flooded (and the only to exist... that’s the negative point of centralize everything in a unique continent).

Step2
AW 1274: MB manages to provoke a clash between two ships. I hope she forgives me if it wasn't her, but I must tell she got lucky because it was too convenient for her to release that decree forbidding space travel. From that day, no one could travel between planets (nor fly on his own).

Step3 [this thread]
AW 1281: In August 11th they brought palmans that live in Dezoris to Parma or Mota by their own free will (fascinating technique).

Step4
AW 1282: Biomonsters start to spread. People start to become afraid of being outside; they had no vehicles since the creation of teleports (never before AW1234) and they would rather use it (teleports) than travel on foot. Not only this gives more control on people's location, but also limits their moving from a place to other (and also personal interaction and communication between towns) because of the limitations we already know. Nei1st was also born (she also seams to be responsible for that explosion, caused by excessive energy, in Biodome that spread those monsters) and went to Climatrol which begun to consume excessive energy... but what for?

Step5
AW 1284: Motavia was (almost) flooded (if weren't by Rolf and co.) which would provoke a genocide. Motavia would be empty and free to colonize. In the same year Palma was destroyed so no one could stand against Earthman. When colonizing Mota, there would be no human rivals (palmans)... so that colonization would be pretty passive and easy. (nice plan!).

Sources:
«It was 50 years ago when Mother Brain prohibited people from going to the ocean.»
«People stopped using any mobile machines after the teleport service was introduced.»
«After the accident of 10 years ago, the use of any spaceship has been prohibited.»
«It's such a surprise to see a human other than the clone lab Grandma! Everybody left three years ago.»
«I am Neifirst, I was born 2 years ago.»

Conclusion: Gas leak was just one of many steps MB/Earthmen used for her master plan.

QFT

Why fake a gas leak when Mother Brain could just... leak poison gas? It also helps explain some of the monsters in Skure like the rabbits. Not sure what to make of the primates like Orangah. Humans who didn't escape?

LOL! You may be right.
These monsters are called 'Orangah' or 'Orangoo' which etymology derives from the Malay and Indonesian words 'orang' meaning "person".

There should still be some gas there, but there's no trace of it

That problem was corrected in PS2remake.

I'm glad they improved on this in the remake, it gave me the feeling like the gas was going to actually start killing me if I stayed in there to long.

Nice catch on the musk cat, I forgot one of them said something about it. I guess that settles it definitively, since the cats would have no reason to lie about that. It's also interesting to hear how it was handled in the remake.
