Nei and Neifirst [SPOILERS!]

Postby Tsunami » Wed Aug 22, '07, 3:04 pm

I found a little inconsistancy in PSII when I was looking over the game's complete script that I read on phantasy-star.net.

Nei and Neifirst are connected since they're the same being, right? As Nei is a part of Neifirst, splitting from her because she didn't like what Neifirst was doing. So if one dies, then so does the other. (or so I thought) But in the game it didn't happen like that.

---Climacontrol---
(Group works their way to the heart of the Climacontrol.)
(Find a girl there.)
- What's this? She looks just like Nei!
- "I am Neifirst, I was born 2 years ago. I am the product of a Bio-systems experiment
combining humans with animals. The people felt the experiment was a failure and thus
tried to kill me.
"But I escaped, and stole DNA data from the Biosystem. I have created monsters to
wreak revenge on the people who so carelessly and selfishly played with life. But there
is another Nei within me; a Nei who is trying to stop me."
- It can't be..., you don't mean...?
- "Yes, that is the one that you call Nei. The one you think is a friend is a monster who
despises all people!"
- "No, I don't hate humans!" said Nei. "I separated from Neifirst because it was so
terrible in her! Of course it is terrible to be born a monster! But I couldn't stand by
while you tried to get revenge by creating monsters!"
- "Fool! You say such things but you are powerless to stop me! Just try it!"
NO - Nei stood with her head down and didn't move. Since Nei and Neifirst
were originally both part of the same body, killing Neifirst would mean
the end of Nei, also.

YES- "I don't want you to make any more monsters! Do you understand?"
(Fight)

(Nei is killed by Neifirst)
- Nei, hold on!
- "There's no hope left for me. Please Rolf don't let them ever repeat the mistake they
made when they made me. I hope everyone on Algo can find happiness in their new
life."
- After saying this, Nei died. Rolf laid Nei's lifeless body gently on the ground.
- Nei! We will avenge you!
(Fight...defeat Neifirst)
- Rolf calls Nei's name once again. But his plaintive cry merely echoes and re-echos.
- The weather control system is shaking terrifically. Now Neifirst is dead, there is no one
controlling it. All the pent-up energy is pouring into the system!
- What has happened? Rolf and the others quickly decide to return to Paseo.

So what does this mean? Is Nei dependent on Neifirst's existance, but Neifirst doesn't need Nei? Or is this simply the case of a bad translation by SOA?

I can't speak for the quality of the translation (I think we all know how unreliable those can be!), but from the script it definitely sounds like Neifirst can survive without Nei. There's no telling how long she would have been able to continue living, but Nei's death doesn't cause Neifirst to die.

Well, Nei is part of Neifirst's being. She basically lives through Neifirst, so she can't survive with out her. This seems to be implied by what happens in the off-chance that Nei actually wins the fight.

"Rolf, there's no hope for me. If Neifirst is dead, I must die, too."
- And in so saying, Nei silently closed her eyes.
- Rolf calls Nei's name once again. But his plaintive cry merely echoes and re-echoes.

I'm guessing Neifirst is probably weakened somewhat by the death of Nei, it's not enough to kill her directly.

Yeah, Neifirst has to be able to survive without Nei.... since you can fight Neifirst with Nei already dead.

I never liked any of the explanations of the Nei/Neifirst relationship. There's the collective soul problem, but it only goes one way.... and that makes Nei a parasite that only lives off of a host, Neifirst. I'd rather they had just made Neifirst too hard for Nei to beat at all, and avoid the whole mess.

Exactly my thoughts. I can't say I care for their relationship, either... I had always liked the idea of Nei and Neifirst having at least some dependency on each other, but I suppose it does show that Neifirst wouldn't hesitate to kill Nei, even if she is a part of herself.

Well, I think Neifirst does have some concern for Nei. She doesn't fight back until Nei directly attacks her. Granted she does provoke Nei, but it's also a warning to what ends up happening.
