Best and Worst Packaging

Postby Thoul » Thu Mar 5, '09, 1:00 am

Out of all the various versions of the classic games that have been released, which ones do you think had the best packaging? Which one had the worst? I don't mean just the art, but also the case or box itself, too. For example, PSII and PSIII had the old Genesis clamshell cases, but PSIV and the GBA collection came in a more plain cardboard box.

Sega sure had nifty packaging back in the day, huh? Sadly, I don't remember any of the old packaging as I only had a SNES at the time the PS's were being released. So I really only remember the GBA box. I recently got a hold of the PS2 remake (PS: Generation 1) and that comes with a pretty neat box. So yeah, I'll go with that one.

I actually can't say I like the all-cardboard packaging some Sega games came in. Since I was young and careless at the time those games came out (and so was my older brother), some of those packages are in pretty sad shape. PSIV included. But the clamshell cases I liked.

Maybe it's a good thing I didn't have an SNES back in the day to get Earthbound and totally ruin it...
Next Pokemon game(s): Pearl
Last finished Pokémon game: Shield
Other games: Skyrim Special Edition (Switch), Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Switch & PS4), Okami (Switch & PS4)
Other gaming goals: completing a Living Pokedex (minus some event Pokes) and going through at least 1 game per generation

Oddly enough, even when I was young I kept up with the condition on the boxes. Probably because back then it was rare when I got a game so I cherished it. Man those were the days. I think I prefer the clam shell only because they're more durable.

I generally prefer the clamshells, too. I don't mind cardboard when it's an actual box, like for the GBA collection. I despise the PSIV cardboard box, though. The whole sliding thing it has going on really annoys me.

I remember the sliding cardboard box for the PSIV and I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't keep it very well maintained during my youth. I don't even know where it disappeared to :( I most definitely prefer the clamshell casing.

I did not care for the cardboard packaging for PSIV. It was one of the first games to use it which was horrible timing since it was retailing for $90. For that much I'd expect better than a flimsy box.

Overall I like the original PS packaging the best because the cover artwork actually looks like the game. The artistic interpretations on the others are fine and everything, I just prefer something that's more representative of what you see in the game.

I loved the art for PSIV and PSIII, but I hated the art for PSII because the characters looked so old. However, I will take a clamshell over a box anyday. Boxes are too hard to keep in a nice condition, especially when you have alot of stuff.
