Special Characters

Postby Silver_Surfer1 » Mon Apr 6, '09, 4:40 am

I was watching a program today on TV and someone on the program made the statement that there was one character for every actor. I assume they meant one special character. You know a character that sets them apart from all the rest, or so memorable you don't forget them, or something along those lines.

That got me to thinking, and I can think of several actors who possibly were/are very well known for not just one, but two or more characters. I suppose they were/are very lucky and very rare.

Anyway, I thought it might be interesting if we here could name an actor that had one, or more than one, special characters they played who was/is so memorable and unforgettable.

One of the first actors that comes to my mind is actor Harrison Ford. He has had not just one, but atleast two special characters that come to mind. First, there was the character of Han Solo in "Star Wars", and Second there was the character of Indiana Jones in all the "Indiana Jones" movies.

Can anyone else think of any others?

I can think of a few..all of them from Lord of the Rings. Christopher Lee nailed Saruman, no one will ever be able to do Gandalf like Ian McKellan...and Viggo Mortenson as Aragorn? Don't get me started. When I read the books now and read about Aragorn, the only thing I can picture is Viggo Mortenson. Man.

How about the Terminator and Arnold? (I refuse to write the last name because I'll probably spell it wrong and I'm too lazy to google it, but we all know who he is)
To me, Arnold is the Terminator and no one else. And I suppose I have to say Heath Ledger and Joker from Dark Knight. Nobody else will be able to play that part the way he did.

I'll add Chris Reeve as Superman. A lot of people have played that role, but they haven't been able to match the presence he brought to it in the first film. I agree with all of the others mentioned so far, too.

How about Johnny Depp as Captain Jack in all the "Pirates Of The Carribbean" movies? I think he nailed that role and can't think of anyone else who could play the role any better or with the special touch that he put to it. He was really a scoundrel. :D

I'd have to say Scott Bakula playing Dr Sam Beckett in the television series Quantum Leap. Does anyone else remember that show?

Oh, and another "special character" would be Calista Flockhart as Ally McBeal in the eponymous television series. The character she is currently playing in Brothers and Sisters, Kitty Walker McCallister, is a conservative Republican and quite different from Ally. Yet it's taken me quite a while to stop thinking "Ally" whenever I see her on screen; she was so memorable in that role. :)
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. - C. S. Lewis

Yeah, Quantum Leap was a good show. I think it still airs on one of the local networks in my area. Hooray for syndication!

I think Scott Bakula was amazing in "Quantum Leap", and also his co-star whose name slips my memory right now.

I also think Scott did not do as well as the captain in the "Star Trek" program he did. Maybe it's just me. I think he's a terrific actor, but I just couldn't get into him as a Star Trek captain, I don't know why.
