Mieu vs Mieu

As with nearly all 16 bit RPGs, characters in the classic series underwent some changes when the games were localized. For most of them, it was just a name change. Rolf is Rolf, regardless of his name. Mieu is one of those few exceptions that had more drastic changes.

In the Japan version, Mieu is about 600 years old, meaning that, like Demi, she was built after the technologically advanced civilization began to regress to a more primitive state. She spent a long time deactivated, so she's not that old mentally. Exactly how long she was offline wasn't revealed, so she could be around Rhys' age in mind. She was also avoiding towns because people tended to stare and crowd around her because of her unusual appearance.

The English version changed a lot of that. She's over 1,000 years old, making her part of the Laya-Orkaio war. There's nothing to suggest she was ever deactivated, so she's much older than in the Japan version in mind and spirit. She's now been waiting for a member of Rhys' bloodline, apparently wandering around the whole time. No reason is given for why she avoids people, but she's apparently strange enough that the townsfolk think she is a Layan.

So, which of these versions do you think makes for the best version of the character?

I prefer the English version. Even though she's young acting, you could attribute that to little human contact and after a war, most peoples minds are changed, I have no doubt even a cyborgs would be altered by all the conflict and destruction. Plus imagine all the extra wisdom she'd have with 1000 years vs 600 years

Personally I also think that English version of Mieu makes a better character proabaly just because I'm use to her story and it made sense to me at the time when I first played PSIII. Not that her Japanese heritage isn't bad in a way both her stories are quite unique. But English Mieu for me.

I, also, prefer the English version. The thought that she is a veteran of the Layan/Orakian war is pretty cool in itself.

Personally, I kind of like the Japan version backstory better on this one. Mieu is a great character either way, but the Japan version seems, I don't know, more human. Easier to relate to, I guess.

It's kind of interesting that Sega changed her story so much. I kind of know and love the English version, so I think that I prefer Mieu's English story over her JP one. ...But that's mainly out of shallowness. XD

I prefer the Japanese backstory for Mieu. It makes more sense and it's believable... Otherwise, wouldn't she also feel a sense of hatred for Layans, as she had fought in the war and all? (if you go by the English version, that is)

There would've been more to her had she been in the war as well. She probably would've continued searching for Layans, as they were the 'enemy' after all. I also doubt she'd be sitting idly by a lake had this been the case, too...
