How about a series of these, Hero(Main Character), Gun-user, Slasher-Wielder, etc. So, who is your favorite main character? And why? I'll include all the PSIII Main Characters so that the field is covered. And I won't use spoiler tags in here because of the warning on the topic. Now, onto my decision!

It's a very difficult decision for me. There are so many facets to consider. Aron from PSIII has the best sprites; I love the seriousness and black cape, and Ayn for the unstated literary reference, while Alis, Rolf and Chaz all fall under the category of fighting for what is right. Chaz gets big points for exercising his mind in questioning the decree of an absent divinity, but he's generally too angry for my tastes. I thought I'd vote for Alis when I started this topic, because she is fighting an oppressive king and avenging the death of her brother, but I must cast my vote for Rolf.

I choose Rolf because he chose a job to defend the system he believed in, believing that it was a prosperous one, built to serve every individual. Another vital point is that he objectively assessed Nei for what she was, a sentient being, not a monster, and was willing to stand by that assessment and defend her with his life. As the story unfolds, he finds that the system he defends is a tyranny bound for destruction, but he continues fighting, because he realizes he wasn't fighting for the Mother Brain system, but for a productive, happy way of life for himself, and therefore for everyone in Algo. His intransigent stand for his right to life wins my vote.

I was going to vote for Aron, but after all the PSIII stuff I've been doing, Nial's character has really grown on me. From the beginning of his quest, he was determined to end the war with Lune's invading army. He freed Alair from Divisia's dungeon, who's not only a Layan, but could be considered an enemy for who she was. To me, that says something about his character. (yeah, I already went over this in another thread...)

In the end, the war was over and... Okay, he always married Alair in my eyes. They're destined to be together! And then Aron would be a very close second choice.

I had to think about this one for a while. In my mind, Alis and Rhys are both out because the main purpose of their quest is vengeance. They both have other goals, but revenge is a big motivator for them. That could apply to Sean as well, but was really short changed in the development department in the game. Adan, Aron, and Crys didn't leave much of an impression on me either.

That leaves Rolf, Ayn, Nial, and Chaz. Nial is a something of a peacemaker as Tsunami observed. Ayn's a more traditional questing hero, out to find a new home for his people. Rolf is really dedicated, even when his world falls apart.

In the end, I'm going with Chaz. He has the most growth as a person, going from the dependent rookie to the sad, mourning young man and finally to the brave warrior that takes up the fight not because it's something he has always done or someone ordered him to do so, but because he realizes it is the right thing to do.

I have to go with Alis. Regardless of what her motivations were, she was an ordinary person that took on this extraordinary task. Rolf and Chaz were trained fighters with years of experience at doing heroic things in their daily job, but she wasn't.

I wondered when there'd be an Alis vote! I thought she'd win for sure.

Here's a little fun; not that this is an objective judgment on the heroes of Phantasy Star, but more as a bizarre look at "heroic" fiction: http://www.camineet.net/camineet/theori ... nscale.asp

I'm not voting for Chaz since his initial motivations weren't much different from Alis or Rhys. His quest started out as an ordinary job for which he got payed. He went after Zio for revenge and was highly reluctant to go on. I'm not sure what I will vote, have to think about it.

I'm going to go with Nial. Alis and Sean are more or less fighting for revenge. Ayn saves his people, but doesn't accomplish much more on a global scale. Aron's quest is more of an investigative one until the truth is revealed. Rhys is fighting for love. I haven't played with Rolf, Crys, or Adan. Chaz could probably go up there, but that's okay. Nial goes out to seek peace and he does just that. His marriages bring peace to the entire ship (at least for about 16-18 years) and if he marries Alair, the sister of the man who destroyed his mother's kingdom, that's a great show of character. You go Nial!

Rolf, for these reasons:

The $ Avenger wrote:I choose Rolf because he chose a job to defend the system he believed in, believing that it was a prosperous one, built to serve every individual. Another vital point is that he objectively assessed Nei for what she was, a sentient being, not a monster, and was willing to stand by that assessment and defend her with his life. His intransigent stand for his right to life wins my vote.

I voted Rolf, for the same reasons as the Avenger. And he's the only hero that gets nothing in return for his deeds, and is probably assumed dead at the end of PS2...
